so ive been given a cheap oldish netbook and its a bit slow, anyway i can speed it up?its running windows 7 starter?dont know if thats good as more of a phone or tablet person than a laptop guy
any help appreciated I got hold of a Samsung netbook a few years back, with the Intel Atom processor. It was running Windows starter edition and was so slow it was almost unusable. I just stuck on Ubuntu and it still works fine. The Upsides: 1) Faster 2) Loads of free software 3) Nice interface 3) I use it for simple stuff such as web surfing, playing videos and a bit of word processing but I have never had a problem. For word processing I can export out to .doc for word or more often .rtf or just plain text. Downsides 1) You can't run windows software 2) You can't run anything to heavy (but you won't be able to do that anyway) 3) You have to take a deep breath when you first install! Nick Netbooks were originally designed to run Linux, windows is definitely to heavy to run on the older netbooks

It is a version of Linux- which means it is free OS UBUNTU LINK
There are lots of different versions on Linux I used this because it is pretty friendly to use and easy to install and update. There are other versions, but I do not have experience of them - at least not recently! You can can run it off a USB flash drive to test it first. See if you like it etc. You can do that that without impacting you windows software. Dell use Ubuntu on some of their laptops PC World LinkI use version 12 which is the version you should probably look at as it doesn't require the latest graphic capability. I am sure others here will have some different thoughts Nick EDIT - Tech radar has a reviews of 10 different consumer focused versions Tech Radar Article
