unless you have the patience of a saint let it be and do its updates automatically, just make sure the power settings dont send it to sleep when untouched for any period and set the automatic updates to happen automatically.. within a few days the win10 upgrade icon will be in your system tray ready to go..

So a few days and it should be good to go. I got various updates but they wouldn't install (win 8.1) and I haven't been happy and having been up since silly o'clock not slept fab either (and now limited when can go back to bed due to neurotic mother LOL) Jane

M$ had it initially in 'important updates' but it has now been moved to 'optional updates'. You might have to do a manual update check and put a check-mark to it. You can also download the ISO from here, a bit down on the page confirm version and language, like everything M$ that might need a few tries. Be aware that with Win 10 you expose yourself to the world , not just M$. There is so much data traffic going on between you and M$ that it is only too easy/likely that it gets intercepted. That's also not very nice for people on a limited I-net connection. Win 10 is only an improvement for those that are on win 8/8.1, you won't feel much of a difference coming from Win 7.

Thanks bioxx this 'ancient processor/cheap plastic laptop' just came with win 8.1 which is fine apart from crashing every 3 minutes..... Another attempt to download and install 161 updates I have just found LOL. Removing McAfee has really speeded it up though - but wish it was a macbook for £200 rather than windows.... I see Linux for new year LOL

Everybody should remove McAfee or Norton ASAP. The difference in performance is Vast. Use a freebie like Avast or AVG instead @johanino

I did that early am sydsut - current hair pulling is over Microsoft net framework for win 8.1 - 4.2 or whatever it's called. taking forever to download and I haven't gotten as far as installing it yet successfully (cos it was taking forever!!!) LOL Now I know why I left windas LOL 30 sec later updateDownloaded said file directly from microsoft. Better not take as long to install as 3pm attempt else will not be happy - then we're down to the last 60+ files before win 10 :-)

How long to get all the updates off win 8.1 bearing in mind this is a new machine djs? Any ideas and it's also installing office with not the best specs on the planet (like hardly any ram and a fossilized processor but it was cheap ) Start to finish 5 hours. First hour new drive and restore. 2 hours updating windows 7. 1 hour 20 minutes download and installing 10 and the rest updates. 4 gb ram, 2 x 2.2 processor 6 mb/sec Internet I have no new info as I'm away from home.

Dual boot Windows/Linux is one of the best option you can have . windows for some games or special programs which doesn't work under linux and Linux for security and simplicity . windows 7 is still the best option , nr8 was a big fail , nr10 is good for testing only is immature and full of security holes. Having linux installed alongside windows is plus for everyone for one simple reason : linux can see windows partition and in case your windows doesn't respond because of viruses or any other problem using linux you still have access to your windows files. .... the true is much more simple and easy to use linux than windows.....
Tips and tricks : Google account offer 15 GB space good to save a lot of files ... Yahoo email with 1TB of storage ....
OS which i really recommend Windows7/Ubuntu_Mate_15

Dual boot Windows/Linux is one of the best option you can have . I used this way back when. Win XP and Linux only booting windows when I needed to work. I might try it again actually.

i suggest u employ both firewalls and av on any *nix systems, clam av should be included with most distributions. most browser hosted threats are aimed at windows, but not all, and most system attacks are aimed at apache hosts which are invariably *nix..
