Replied in the other thread. New tech takes years to get to market, we were told about 10 years at Uni, I remember just after the fall of the Berlin Wall & USSR the Eastern Bloc blue laser scientists were getting bought up to develop optical video/data discs, BluRay was released about 9 years later, but only got the first video discs 4 years after that.

some tech goes from showcased in a science fair to everyday product in less time (nanocrystalline coating for cell phone) and things have sped up a lot since the bad old days of the video disc (16" or 12" cd for the not so old farts amongst us) those things held more data than hdd's as did the original 1gb cd's but typical industry alu foil was cheaper so cd's only had 700mb of data capacity ..... they took a tiny amount of time to hit the retail market as well mostly thanks to sony, blue-ray or hd-dvd was different since it required a tiny change to the way things were already being done (purple laser emitter with wavelength change function for multi purpose drives needed building to make sure the vhs/Betamax saga didn't re-occur) with regards to red or blue lasers (both advanced off the led developed in the 1940's) far from iron curtain boffins needed it was western /indian scientists that made them possible but that's a whole other story ... with regard to the lipo varients and the new nano/pico tube structured storage units the concept has been around since the 1950's but only started to become reality as modern tech has permitted standardised creation of the component parts, the Chinese will have them on ebay within 6 months regardless of patents so the process of getting them market ready should have been completed before the public announcement was made
