Been there several times. Post 1980 but before Comrade Bob had really done a number on it. I liked it much more than where I was working on the Zambian/Angolan border. I left there in 1979 when it was a great country, now, I am not sure.

Not that it is a high bar to cross.

My experience of African cities is that the bush has a whole lot going for it.
Much more than any city I've been in on the continent.

In the early 70's I went to Rhodesia and saw the Zimbabwe Ruins
Went to Zimbabwe in the late 80's and saw the Rhodesia ruins....

Not a roadie but while a stooodent up north in the 80's i was a humper.. (did the actual lumping about or work in prep for the gigs, employed by the promotors but supplied by the hall, then during the gig we did the security) when pissed up i can tell tales of sharing a puff with misty n the roots, busting the brand new sound system just bought by flock o'seagulls accidently (probably cost them all their 1 hit wonder royalties..) and 20 odd years later the penny dropped as to why the glitter band didnt like talking about Gary much.. Tho at the time it was just grimy sweaty work at unsocial hours..
