Thanks chykensa . I find the twisted coil at 1.1ohm and 12 watts takes about 3-5 seconds of slow draw, but it's certainly heating and producing a great MTL flavour. Better than the KFL +2 in my opinion and without that darn whistle ;-) I'm not buying anymore tanks mate - I have purchased several now over the last 3 months (2 more last week, Crius (didn't like it at all) and Footoon I need to try again before I write it off completely) but I go back to the subtanks every single time. I'll be ordering two of the new top-fill Subtank Mini's soon pre TPD to have them spare, but after that it will take something special to entice me now (The new Kayfun Mini nearly did until I saw the air control is internal - sigh - really dissapointed by that but saves me spending £70 I guess). Thanks igual I have added both to the list. I find the vape way too hot for me above 15 watts, which is mainly why I vape at low watts and MTL. I just tried it then at 17watts and after I opened up the air it certainly cooled down a bit but it is still too hot on the tongue for my liking (probably my non-standard drip tip is channeling the vapor to thinly?). Anyways, I can literally watch the tank emptying of juice with every vape over 15w and even though I DIY it's just not for me. I really like the Subtanks and I will find the perfect MTL vape from it one day, darn it! ;-) Don't fret - having read these forums and others for a few months I accept I'm an odd style of vaper :-)

Don't panic over liking Subtanks, @hondo, that's the great think about this vaping lark, we're all different! If you are happy with MTL and a low-watt vape, considering the juice consumption and everything else, then stay happy. The Crius and Fontoon are sub-ohm tanks, so are designed to have low resistance coils and a large airflow to keep the vape cool. If you are MTL vaping then of course the vape will get hot, the airflow keeps the coil and vapour cool, hence the massive slots in the AFCs. I wouldn't have thought you will improve much over a twisted or Clapton coil at your preferred power rating, so relax and enjoy your newly-found flavour

It's been a week now and using the twisted 28AWG delivers every single time. I have to re-wick every day (I had too anyway) but the flavour is so vastly improved over non twisted.
I ordered some 30AWG wire yesterday which should arrive today. I'm going to try and get the twisted coil ohms up to 1.4ohm (6 wraps), which will be closer to my preferred vaping range. I think I might need 31AWG for this really (I mis-calculated yesterday), but looking forward to further testing today regardless :-)

Well just to conclude this thread, the wire arrived yesterday and I have two builds running at the moment. There is not much between them performance and taste wise and both are great. The first is 7x 3.0mm wraps of twisted 30AWG, which comes in at about 1.6ohm. The second is 8x 3.0mm wraps of twisted 30AWG, which comes in at about 1.8ohm. I didn't think I'd get more than 6 wraps to fit in the RBA, but of course the 30AWG is a thinner wire than 28AWG, so 8 wraps is about the same coil width as 6x 28AWG and therefore fits nicely.
Both twisted coils are producing great flavour and a smooth vape in the Subtank mini anywhere between 9-13watts, with the smallest air hole open mostly, although I have found the next airhole up (slightly bigger) works nicely with these bigger twisted coils as well. Vaper production is similar to a stinky I'd say, so fairly discreet too.
If there is anyone else as odd as me out there who likes to MTL in the Subtank (high ohms, low watts) I would definitely encourage them to try a 3.0mm twisted coil if they get the chance, as this is quite simply the tastiest vape I have experienced yet. I am discovering new flavours in juices I haven't tasted before. Not even the Kayfun can touch the flavour/vape I am getting now with this build. IMO of course.
The reason I have stuck with the Subtank (even though I MTL) and thrown several other tanks to the back of the cupboard (including some older MTL tanks, as well as newer tanks like the iSubs, Crius etc) is due to the Subtanks 100% hassle/leak/flooding free, ease of use and ease of build. I hope one day manufacturers will turn some attention back to MTL vapers and produce a good modern MTL tank as easy to maintain and build on as the Subtank, but until then I expect I'll be sticking to the Subtank Mini with this tasty twisted coil MTL build. Cheers all.

Really pleased @hondo that you have found a great solution to your vaping. Isn't it lovely to find something that's easy to maintain, hassle-free and cheap to finance? Happy vaping and best of luck in discovering all those new flavours

Thanks @hondo , your thread has inspired me to give twisted a try and I must say that the results are brilliant. Like you, MTL is my preferred method and In fact I was really satisfied with my current set up of basic Kanthal at 1.8 and 12 watts. Well I twisted a section of 28awg and built a coil at 1.3 this morning and happily tooting away on some very flavoursome custard. I have upped watts to 18.5 Having tried a multitude of different tanks over the last couple of years I now pretty much use the UTA2 exclusively (clones may I add) due to ease of build, leak free and awesome flavour.

Cheers chykensa. I definitely felt a little surge of relief yesterday when I realised I could finally stop looking for the best equipment/setup. It's all down to you and others like you on this forum who are always there with support and advice and I can't thank you all enough. So thank you! Cheers @paulo that's great news! As I mentioned above, this forum has given me so much help over the past few months since I gave up smoking that it is great to be able to finally share some information that might be of use to someone. But darn you, you had to go and mention the UTA2 didn't you, a tank I've never heard of before. Having now Googled it and read the rave reviews I can tell you now I will not last the weekend without placing an order for the clone on FT. And so it begins again

Sorry to bring this thread back from the dead, but I just wanted to thank @paulo . What a fine MTL tank the UTA2 is. It has the flavour output of a Kayfun (no whistle either - hurrah), and the ease of build of a Subtank (once you suss the wicking is a little different). I can't believe I hadn't heard of this tank before you mentioned it but I'm extremely grateful that you did. Thanks again!
