Anybody would think the EU wanted us to vote out, although I'm sure our esteemed occupant of No 11 will be looking at doing this even if we leave the EU.

Gawd they have to pay out our pensions for longer now we might live another 10 years.

of course there going to tax them, now they come under the tobacco products directive its blatently obvious they will be subjected to tobacco tax.... slightly strange though that have decided to start adding all the other novel tobacco products under the same 57% (soon to be 60%) tax bracket, up until now pipe and cigar stuff has had a separate levvy but it seems like from 2017 everything will have the same level of taxation ....

what I don't understand is why they haven't added carbon taxes into the mix, perhaps because the EU doesn't get a take of that....

I think everything about the way this has been done is truly repugnant, incompetent and unaccountable.

The question is whether getting out of the EU stops any of it - both what is in place and what they agree in the future. There will be immense pressure from exporters and other beneficiaries of EU access to maintain these privileges - but the cost of that will be EEA-style subordination to the acquis and single market rules. All the grief with no say - whatever LEAVE says, that is the most likely outcome.

Where I think we really go wrong in Europe is saying yes to stuff that is complete rubbish in the Council and political groups and not forming alliances to say no. UK officials and MEPs led the charge on medicine regulation for e-cigarettes and did nothing to stop bonkers TPD measures. Public Health Minister Soubry didn't even know what was going on and no scrutiny in Westminster stopped it (even though in Denmark it would have). The problem is Cameron's reforms looked in the wrong place - the weakness is with UK ministers and officials and the way they lose all sense of reality when they take the Eurostar. Europe pools sovereignty but we go to Brussels and Strasbourg and just give it away.

Think Cameron has lost on 40 odd votes in the council of ministers. Or every time he's voted. Farage says its a waste of time voting in the parliament even if you are having a common sense moment or three. The Federalists are advancing...pay up or simply leave.

I hear (today) that the EU is currently polishing off plans to tax e-cigarettes with the exact same tax rate as cigarettes.

So, as we expected - a blanket 'sin' tax of 57%.

No real surprise.

No, we just have to work an extra 10 years before we can retire ! By the time I get my pension I'll be 83 or dead

The only thing they can tax is the nicotine. Unlike tobacco, where other than rolling your own there is very little DIY going on. Vaping is very much DIY in terms of the equipment and especially the juice. Even after TPD there will be a range of juice with different nic strength. It will be interesting to see what approach they adopt. Not that it is likely to ever effect me as I have at least 2 years worth of nic in cold storage, and by then my juice will have next to no nic in there. I feel sorry for new starters as they will not enjoy the benefits of reduced cost, but even then, unlike fags, the cost will go down over time as nic reduces. So it will still be worth kicking the fags.

I'm afraid it's not just the Nicotine. It's EVERYTHING.

Every item related to e-cigs.
