Boys doing well on new varied diet... I feed 'em all sorts but it's healthy for them This includes baby crisps (low sugar), puffed spelt, and Sainsburys basic muesli. I like to give them a couple of things every night....and I like to change it. I have a huge shopping bag in the kitchen now with all their food. also they won't eat the food unless it has a little water on it but that's okay. Thanks guys for all your help with them:) Jane

I've had to take one of my boys (Atlas) to the vets this evening. He started breathing very fast and laboured yesterday afternoon and I thought it might have been a heart problem as his chest sounded clear. The vet couldn't even hear his heart as he is breathing so hard so he is on three meds (an antibiotic in case it's pneumonia, a diuretic incase it's a heart problem and a pain killer) if he goes downhill or does not improve over the weekend, he has to have X-rays on Monday to check his heart but if he improves, he has to go back in a weeks time to see if the vet can hear his heart any better then. I hope my baby improves!! It's his 2nd birthday on may 22nd and I refuse to lose him so close to it!

Thankyou everyone He seems a little better today but is still breathing very fast Its also extremely difficult to get 5 lots of meds a day down him lol he's grown wise to what I'm doing, and knows the meds are hidden in the baby food too intelligent for his own good! Lol

It never rains but it pours I've noticed today that Helios flinched when I stroked him so I put him on the floor and he's dragging one of his back legs looks like its probably hind leg degeneration as he hasn't had any falls or anything. This is the part of owning rats I really dislike, they have such a short lifespan but make a huge impact on your life and I detest seeing them go downhill so quickly as they get older. It's almost as if someone flicks a switch, one day they're fine and the next they suddenly have a myriad of health problems I hate losing them, I really hope I've got a good few months left with my boys but the way things are going with a couple of them I'm not so sure

Och no....poor you...My boys are really chipper since the new diet though am aware they could go downhill at any point...they'll be 2.5 soon...
Did you say you adopted your Bee? Where from? Just wondered....
Noticed my boys are no so with it with bedding (they ignored the tissues) so a bit worried about their minds ...but still ...can rats get senile...

Helios has completely lost the use of his back legs I'm having to help him with everything. I'm giving him several small baths a day with cotton wool as he keeps weeing all over himself the poor thing, I have to pick him up and put him where he wants to go as he can't climb the cage. But he's still bright in himself and interested in food/playing etc so I don't want to make any rash desicions as far as having him PTS, I don't think he's ready to go yet he will tell me when it's time I think. Atlas' breathing had improved a lot on his meds, but he ran out of them on Friday so is back at the vets for more tomorrow, I think he's going to be on them for the remainder of his life now. I just realised I didn't see your other post sorry! I adopted my boys from a local rescue - rodent rescue Manchester. Awww one of my boys was upside down in their house the other day lol Ignore the filthiness of the towel he's lay on, it was just before I'd cleaned them out lol. They get a clean towel in their house everyday and how they manage to get it so filthy within 24 hours is beyond me lol Edit: that's Typhon in the pic by the way

Aww what a shame about lil Helios. It's so upsetting when our furries take ill, especially when there isn't much you can do to help them.
