Restarting this thread as sure Milo has hind leg degeneration he's been flat on his back legs for a while and tipping over but now his right leg has completely gone and he's in pain (grinding teeth like a mad man).. Took him to PDSA and he did seem to improve after all her flexing of his legs but I don't know how to do that but this evening downhill again. Off to another vets tomorrow to get second opinion Found a youtube video on bathing rats so he might well get a bath tomorrow. Bob is fine.... Och feeling rubbish as I thought it was that and like I remembered you Beeratz and Helios... Thought today would be his last day so have been so stressed out about him Jane

Don't.know about taking him for a second opinion or.not. Not sleeping with the stress. At least he's back in his housey thing now but I have 2 keep a close eye on him. Apparently you can pick up thr back legs & half carry him round so he can get some exercise. Just using his front paws. And also you can clean his ears out for him.
Milo.is without fail going to have his second bath tomorrow. He won't enjoy that and I may have to help him with toileting but so far he's ok.
Thing.is I saw the early signs and mentioned it to the vet way back in April and she said he was fine. Argh!!!

Morning all...didn't get to bed till gone 2am with the stress of milo Sorry for all the typos on the post done using the phone Have slept on it and like he's off to the new vets this am. ...going to make an appointment in a minute or two. I will register him to but not register the other one as I can't afford it just yet and he's perfectly healthy. Don't know. Might just blow the budget and register both of them. Not happy with PDSA. I phoned the new vets this am (after a quick scan of the yellow pages trying to find one local) and they sounded really nice. Also my friend takes his dogs there and has never had any probs. And they have a couple of good reviews on which local . So I reckon he'll be fine. He had a bath (as per youtube ) at 1.30am and hated it but also gave me a chance to notice he practically has no fur. It's hidden cos he's white and ronan but still. Not good ....poor fur baby... So no jogging this am and like not much today will get done but still Will keep everyone updated. Just so thankful to beeratz for all her helpful posts earlier this year. He might need pain medicine. Don't know. Found out via the Fancy Ratz forum you can give them children's brufen (just 15mg per lb of rattie) but that's not good in elderly rats and I should have been giving him glucosamine something or other from about march but it's too late for that now - just to delay the Hind Leg stuff Jane

Jane, if it helps at all, I truly believe that it is the one act that truly shows how much we love and care for our pets, that we can be selfless enough to let them go.
Hugs to you. #grouphug# #icon_sorry#

He was ready to go after a night in all that pain ....Thanks guys
Bob is getting a new exercise wheel and a treat tomorrow when I go in and tell the old chappie at the pet store (he's lovely and I took Milo to meet him this pm before he got put to sleep)
After much deliberation and like one whoopsie (cancelled. Dumb move trying to get a rat a 8.5" exercise wheel ) I did some research and got him a plastic flying saucer
No probs with tails and he won't get fat. He's pining but nibbling. I tried to get him out this evening and he thought he was going the same way as Milo and promptly bolted. Squeak squeak. Then wanted to come out again so have left classic fm on for him. Might put the digital radio on for him too. It's supposed to be comforting for them. I know when I first got them I put it on for them and let them settle in and they soon calmed down.
Anyhow have had brilliant support today. Feel like I could have given Milo pain medicine instead of putting him to sleep but then I remember how much pain he was in last night. There's a big difference between a rodent grinding teeth in happiness and one doing it in pain. Huge difference. The latter is not pleasant.
Not very frugal getting Bob a new exercise wheel but have been meaning to get one for a while

Aww Jane am sorry to hear he's gone but imho it was the only outcome. Yes you could have given him pain relief but I feel strongly that should only be used for pain that Can be overcome and hld is a permanent condition so the likelihood is he'd have been on it for the rest of his life which doesn't seem kind to me.
BIg hugs losing them always hurts XXX
