Hi all, So promised to post up what I am up to like 2 weeks ago but since then the project took more time than I anticipated and changed direction. Firstly I wanted to make an epoxy case from scratch but messed the measurements so it would only house the baterry but even that is not well. This is after sanding down the rough edges a bit without any paint or lid: Then I thought that I will build a case from lego blocks - but that turned out too bulky (good job I haven't glued them together!). No pics for that but believe me size factor was huge! So fast forward a week and we are here: The plastic is just a template for stainless steel bit to be cut to size. I hope to polish it but failing that I might just paint it satin black. What are your thoughts?

Brilliant, I love real 1 off home made jobs. Good luck with it.

Nice one naDiel Paint or polish is up to you it's your baby, but as you asked personally I would go for a brushed finish as it as a lot more durable and repairable especially compared to paint, but I am rough on my mods.

phtumshk Thank you buddy! Yes it is supposed to be a one off but already had a few people I know asking if I could build them some... So don't know.. This might turn into a hobby VapingBad brushed finish idea came to my mind just before I went to bed last night when I was looking at the case again because the dremel slipped few times and scratched the surface a bit, so might need readjusting. I was also thinking of getting them done in polyurethane of certain shore but since I messed the measurements on the epoxy one I would probably use this box to take the measurements for the battery I go for it. Oh... On that subject the battery running the show in this mod would be THIS. In theory I could build as low as 0.032ohms but that is daft to do as it is near enough a total short. But the battery can take up to 234 amps! So plenty of head room for silly builds whilst maintaining safety and small(ish) size.

How do you plan to drop down from 7.4v which is the rating for a 2s LiPo?

How do you plan to drop down from 7.4v which is the rating for a 2s LiPo? Plan is to use 1k pot to do that similar to what @windows build just few topics below. Overall it is supposed to be PWM with 1k pot, mosfet and a volt meter as well to keep an eye on the voltage, so it doesn't drop to less than 6.2 volts (3.1 per cell).

I have just accidentally changed the direction of this project again, so expect some more developments as the supplies arrive

So supplies arrived and due to me being me and getting too excited then rushing the process - got exhausted and need to reorder! But some pictures of fails and then eventually one piece that went right: First pour (forgot release agent, so it is stuck solid and chiseling it out only breaks it ): Second pour (forgot release agent - AGAIN! - and used masking tape like a plum! Then the centre piece was inbalanced and floted up on one side hence uneven cavity): And here with after using new mould that costed me the whole £1 and actually remembering about release agent (still needs cleaning up mind): Supplies reordered... Hopefully will be completed next weekend. Must be actually as need it for VapeExpo in NEC Birmingham!

Like the mould idea naDiel, check out oogoo you can easily get the ingredients for a couple of quid (silicon & corn flour) and use this for the mould.

VapingBad yes took that into consideration but found a better mould for literally £1 so could not resist. Progress from today time! So supplies arrived on Thursday: And got to work tonight. Took me 2 hours and half of the supplies to get it where I wanted it to be which is as per below: Inside is rough but I don't mind as it will be covered anyway and goong to leave the vaseline marks on the cover as the look grown on me. Tomorrow hopefully I'll drill the necessary holes for 510, pot, switch and cut out a little window for voltmeter which will be recessed a bit. Just need to be careful not to break it

Progress is being made altough lack of a step drill can be felt... Not bothered anyway... Sneak peek:

VapingBad & @windows I think I have either shorted something or something did not go so well... Finished last evening around 10pm - all the components wired in and soldered. Everything covered in shrink tubes, so it doesn't short. Plug the battery in and we have power! Done about 15-20 chugs on it with 0.32 ohm coil - vapour galore and it just chugs it out like crazy (2-3 second puffs). From my calculations if run on 40%-50% power it should draw max of about 23 amps. Back indoors I was looking at the battery leads and wasn't happy with their length. Took them out of the circuit completely, removed them from the battery. Made sure that bullet connectors are soldered properly as one came off when I pulled it out of the battery and shortened the leads (cut them in the middle and resolder together). Now for some reason I get auto firing when I connect the battery... As it was late I wasn't going back through all the components but put it aside with the battery obviously disconnected, but my question is - is it mosfet or resistor on it fried? Button? 555 timer circuitry? Just asking to make sure I tackle this with common things to look out for when I get home from work. Apart from the above 90% finished Now I FULLY understand why people charge for making them so much... Amount of work that goes into making one is insane! But loved every (nearly) bit of it... Before it started autofiring :/

Sounds like when you reconnected the MOSFET the wire went to different points as that acts as the switch. I would check the wiring against the diagram with a continuity checker or ohm metre paying care full attention to the orientation of the MOSFET. IDK that's your prob, just seems most likley. I have never done a MOSFET build, but I have read that they don't take super high currents without generation a lot of heat and I would check that the one you have can handle that much current.
Good luck Jon

Ive never done a pwm but have messed about with a few mosfet builds and have suffered from auto firing. If my understanding is correct the resistor across the poles of the mosfet is there to help shut the switch off. In my case I presumed the resistor had fried and wasnt doin its job of closing the gate so to speak. I never bothered proving this as for the cost of the components it was easier to just but some new. Im no technician so the above may be utter tripe but good luck with getting it fixed up.
