You could try leaving the shims out, just slap a load of copper slip on the back of the pads. He did leave them out windows. Thats how i read it anyway. Those shims are only to help prevent squealing anyway.

Damn car and its silly jack Took longer to wind the jack up and take off the wheel than taking out the shims With shims the disk was solid Shims off and the disk spun Trip round the block and no cooking, just a mild warm One of the shims was stuck to the pad, had to pry it off with a screwdriver on the off side front So it looks like the shims are just added bulk in the box

Lee make sure the pistons are free to go ALL the way back in with just a bit of resistance and with the pads out your calliper slides easily in and out.

Think there was about a mm of rust lip round the edge of them
Disks have no score marks on them
The brakes were squealing for a few weeks and felt like metal on metal a couple of times Hence jumping in and fitting new pads only to find there was still a good amount of pad left
