How To design a coil with Steam-Engine.org

I am writing this as some folks find the Steam-Engine.org Coil Wrapping page a little confusing and it is stopping them trying temp limiting. The process is the same regardless of temp limiting, it is just that with temp limiting the wires are lower res so you have fewer choices. BTW for temp limiting try to get as close to your favourite build in terms of coil size (inner diameter & num wraps), then wire gauge. Like all variable wattage builds ohms only matter in that they should be in the range your mod supports and have nothing to do with power handling, flavour or clouds.

The main thing that is confusing is the resistance value, this is the easiest value to change to get the results you want, don't be afraid to Chang it. The second thing is the Heat Flux, how hot the surface of your coil gets, the icon changes colour showing how well the coil matches the watts you selected. I like < 200 heat flux, you may be different and like a cooler or warmer vape, it is just a guide, but I would try and stay in the green area at least. If it's just a guide what's the point? Well it gives you a good starting point and lets you compare different types of build to each other.

Values in blue boxes are input values or values I changed since the last screen.
Values in green boxes are important result values, the ones I am trying to optimise.
Values in red boxes are the same as for green box except they are too far out to be acceptable showing I need to change something else.

I will put a link to Steam-Engine.org with the values in the screen shot, open them and have a play to get a better feel for it.

The 1st screen: I set the values in the blue boxes to start with, the red boxes show the results of these setting.

So now I will change things to get the results we want: sensible number of wraps and Heat Flux around 200 at the wattage I chose 25 W. The next 3 screens are just different ways of achieving the same goal.

note this is back to 2.5 mm diameter coil, just an alternative to the last screen.

Nothing surprising here, just what you already knew more wraps or larger diameter spread the heat a little more and vice versa.  But it can help you to know which wire to choose and how many wraps to start with, which is especially helpful when using a new wire type or atty, these are the only time I use it.

OK, but I want more power
Then you need to change something else, twisting wire is probably the cheapest and easiest way to do this and IMO mostly gives superior flavour.  I have just continued from the 2nd screen above to quickly show how much more power twisted coils can handle if your wicking and airflow are good enough.  The same would apply to clapton and other fancy wires, but I won't to keep this simple so am not going to get into that.

So to sum up these a 9 wrap 2.5 mm coil will work well at x watts
single strand 0.4 mm  25 W
2 twisted strands of 0.30 mm 42 W
3 twisted strands of 0.25 mm 50 W
4 twisted strands of 0.20 mm 52 W

Great tutorial.
Can't help wondering though when people stopped just making coils of differing sizes and adjusting power to get a decent vape and started relying on recommended power levels found on packaging and using apps and websites.
For me personally it really isn't that complicated. Make a coil, set the mod to the correct wire type, adjust power to taste.
