A couple of weeks ago I had sore throat and found that dtl vaping wasn't helping it so I closed down the airflow on my Merlin rta, fitted a 1.2 ohm coil and vaped small puffs at 13 watts without inhaling .... Just drawing the vapour into my mouth, holding it there for a few seconds and then exhaling through my nose. This had the desired effect on my sore throat situation but I also found that not only was I getting enough of a nicotine hit but the flavour of my eliquid was a lot more pronounced. I had read an article some time ago which explained that the majority of nicotine in vapour is absorbed by the body through the mouth, nose and upper throat membranes and only a tiny minority through the lungs (something to do with vapour particles being about 10 times larger than tobacco smoke particles) so the same nicotine hit was no surprise but the increased flavour was a very welcome surprise. I have continued vaping in this manner as I find it a very relaxing way to vape ( particularly when using an epipe) ... I am getting the same nicotine, better flavour and nothing is entering my lungs so win win as far as I'm concerned

Both chocolate and liquorice, 2 additives found in cigarettes, when burned, produce a chemical that relaxes the throat muscles and allows more smoke to get right down into the lungs.
As this does not happen with vaping, any nicotine that gets down into the lungs will be far less than would do with smoking, so most of the nicotine that vapers enjoy, probably enters the blood stream from the mouth anyway.

This study explains this differences in the absorption mechanism and rates for vaping and smoking.... www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4469966/And yes, to quote from another source.... " the smaller size of the particles in analog smoke mean that (much) more of the nicotine reaches the lungs, where passage to the bloodstream is far easier (the barrier is much less here because the haemoglobin of red blood cells in the blood needs to be able to latch onto oxygen from the air; with digestion, absorption of sugars, say, needs to be slower as blood sugar levels need to be tightly controlled, so absorbtion in the mouth is much slower).
* Smoke particle size : 0.1 to 1 micron; PG mist droplet size : 1 to 5 micron"

Whatever works for you @yinyang. Whatever works.
But, as a strict MTL vaper myself, I admit to having a bit of a smile at your return from the DTL world back into MT, well, M side of things. Welcome back!
Yes - I've also heard that Nic from vaping is mostly absorbed thro your nasal/sinus areas rather than thro your lungs...

Don't understand why you're surprised. MTL, you hold your vapour longer in the mouth, and the tongue is where your taste buds are.

I've always thought that heating up food flavourings with 100+ watts of power and inhaling directly into the lungs is where any long term harm might lie. I'm happy to get by with 9 watts of MTL, with the occasional nose exhaust to get a flavour hit - but each to his/her own if it keeps you off the fags.

Fellas - I too am a "restricted draw" MTL vaper. I tried the Merlin. Even with the supplied insert I found it too open and airy on the draw for me. I addressed that by making my own tighter inserts - which I documented here: linky. I found this suited my vape style better than closing down the outer air control ring when using the supplied reducer. I used it with my standard coil setup - single 8 wraps of 26 gauge kanthal at 3mm diam spaced coil - and pumped a mind numbing 17 to 18 watts thro it.

Personally I like 100w as the heat punches out the flavours for me and having my lungs full of nice warm vapour satisfies me . on the exhale the vapour gets held in my mouth for a couple of seconds and my tongue soaks up even more yummyness. I get what others are saying about mtl but it just doesn't do it for me as it feels like a struggle for no satisfaction

Also I feel some people are under the wrong impression. When using 100w you use a lot more wire and draw a lot more air. Hence not frazzling and ruining the juice to the point of any danger. It just creates more flavour and vapour and yes a little warm but is completely comfortable and controlled by the wide open air flow. I can put up to 100ml of juice through my wicks before replacing them as they are so well saturated and have so much airflow. In my early days of mtl with all that tightness things got gunked up and burnt a lot quicker for me

Also I feel some people are under the wrong impression. I do understand..... and it obviously works for you. I find MTL "does it" for me. So that's where I stay. One day, I'll tell of the time I Direct Lunged at 60 someething watts with a something special fancy new (at the time) sub tank thingo in a Vape Shop. I did retain my dignity ... just. But not without mucho internal fighting the natural urge to a) cough up a lung or two, b) spew and c) pass out !! *grin*

I like the draw a little less tight really. It was more the diameter of the coil that was my main concern. DJLsb vapes did a review and ended up making 4mm coils. 3mm is my standard (2.5mm on really old-school Kayfuns). 26 gauge is my go to wire at the moment as well. I'm also favouring spaced coils when I can.... Thanks DaveJ and @yinyang Might get two actually...

The Merlin has enough deck space for anything up to a 5mm coil but the restriction is the amount of cotton that can be fed into the juice well without choking it .... I have found a 3mm id coil to be the optimum. There is plenty of scope airflow wise for anything from full blown cloudzbro dtl to comfortable mtl. Disclaimer:
The opinion on mtl vaping is of course only the opinion of someone who has been vaping dtl for the past 18 months and who has quite forgotten how he vaped mtl for the previous 2 years.
