My attitude is that that you need to start on something that covers the basic bases, from whispy vaping to sub ohming. I think definitely a regulated mod for safety and a little education is needed. The trouble I see using something like a nautilus is that whispy vaping doesn't satisfy enough for a lot of people and then they try something like a crown and they wish they'd gone straight for that. So I see it as buying something that covers only one base and as being a waste of money tbh. After using something simple like an Evic and crown that covers all bases, then the newbie can get a good idea of which way to go. Whispy or Cloudy I mix for 30 vapers many of whom Angie & I introduced to vaping. Only one has gone sub ohm. A few use Protanks or K1s but the rest are using the iStick 30W & Nautilus Mini or Nautilus.
All but 3 have found the one liquid they like and use nothing else. One has the same 2 flavours. The other 2 will try anything and change flavours when they find one they like.
My experience is that the vast majority of new vapers want MTL. They all say they want tobacco flavour until they have a tasting session. Only 2 of the 30 have a tobacco flavour.
So for the best chance of converting to vaping you can't beat simple. We've only had 3 smokers who didn't switch and they said they found what I call simple to be too much faffing.
The sub ohmer is using 360mls a month. He was paying £4 for a Cleito coil until I got them for him for £2.
The MTLers nearly all have 60mls a month. Most pay £1.75 for a coil. 5 of them use coil heads that I recoil & wick for free.
We nutters enthusiasts are a tiny minority. The majority want it simple, cheap & as much like smoking as possible.

Not in my relatively short experience of just over 5 years. Most I meet prefer a good old yummy sub cloud

I was wondering if it was an age thing, where the more mature might prefer the more conservative whispy vape. This does not seem to be the case though as one friend of mine is 70 and not long got an alien and a beasty tank thingy. He absolutely loves it lol. Yes still more overall might stay whispy but I think that is shifting a little as people are learning and trying cloudage

Only 5 of my 30 are in their 20's. There were 2 more but they were told to get lost for either not turning up when arranged or turning up with no arrangement.
Us oldies just want something simple to replace smoking. Ohms, watts & volts we'd have to get the grandchildren to set it up. We'll leave you whipper snappers to find your way through the fog.
In my town we have 2 vape shops and a permanent Socialites stand in a shopping centre. One shop only caters for whispy old farts. They wouldn't stock the iStick 30W because "It's too powerful for our customers". The other has a range of devices. When I walk by the shops often have no customers. I have never walked by the Socialites stand when they haven't had a customer there.
The BAT cigarette factory in Southampton was demolished and only the laboratories were left standing. They are now used solely for vaping research. I don't think much sub ohming is going on in there because I don't see any clouds when I shop at the Costco next door. Big tobacco know what people want. They just don't want them to have it cheap.

Just an update. Heard no more from the friend of a friend until two hours ago. She just called with chocolates and news that she has not smoked since I saw her last. Her success alone but I still feel a bit of satisfaction.
Thanks again to all who gave advice. You all contributed with no self-interest to the outcome.

I was the first at my work to vape...and so far i have converted over 50% of the smokers to vaping. Plus a load of customers and friends
