Brave Little Boy

It's been a very bad week or so in Derby, and heaven has now acquired 8 young Angels, in different, but equally tragic circumstances.

There was a house fire, which I'm sure you've heard about, it was started deliberately, it took 6 Children from their parents. I can't imagine anything worse than losing a child, and I certainly can't bring myself to think about what these parents, siblings, family and friends are going through. I live very close to where it happened, and my heart has been aching all week, so I dread to think how the family feel. It's really shaken the whole community, but they have pulled together in ways in which I have never seen. My thoughts are, and have been all week, with that family.

There was also a baby killed locally, I don't know much about that, but as I said in another thread, it just proves that it never rains but it pours.

The last little lad is 7 year old Lewis Mighty, some of you may have heard of him and heard his story, but for those that haven't. He was 7 years old, for around 4 years he's been battling a rare form of cancer, called Neuroblastoma. He was so brave, and up until a month or so ago, it looked like he'd won his fight. Until he fell ill with pneumonia, the doctors then discovered his cancer had returned, and he was given days to live. Despite this he stayed brave, accepted his fate, and enjoyed the last few days he had left with his family. What's remarkable about this little boy is his bravery, and just how loving, full of life, and well loved, he was in the community. He will be missed, dearly. I've been so touched by his story, and the other losses recently, that I wanted to do something, but I really don't know what to do. I think the question has been answered for me, this is a statement from the lewis mighty fund...

Lots of people have asked how they can donate in Lewis's memory. We are asking anyone who wishes to donate to support the great work of the ward that cared for Lewis, E38 at QMC, Nottingham. They are trying to raise £75,000 for better family facilities, such beds for parents, a better play room for children, teenage facilities for siblings and to really just make the ward less clinical and more family friendly. But this brings me onto why I'm writing this, I'm thinking of doing something, possibly a sponsored something or other, to raise money for the E38 ward and the Lewis Might Fund, and I want to do it with the whole family. So I'm asking all of you for ideas, things I can do with young children, that I could be sponsored for. I'm not exactly physically fit, although Its obviously got to be challenging in some way...

Derby County have been fantastic to lewis and his family, raising money for him when there was still a chance he would need to go to America for treatment, the players have sent video messages to lewis, visited him, and much more I can't think of off the top of my head. No doubt they would be willing, and it is a fantastic idea, it could even become an annual thing to raise funds for kids like him and the people who look after them, and also raise awareness about neuroblastoma. The only thing is several people are already doing the race for life in his name. Definitely an idea worth thinking about though. Thanks colli

Family fun day with an auction I'm sure local businesses would be happy to donate and those who are unable to donate goods can put themselves into auction. For eg winner gets so and so for an afternoon of gardening, decorating, cleaning etc.
Bouncy castle and face painting for the kids.
Takes a bit of organizing though. I've contributed to a few in the past and they have raised quite a bit. If you need a face painter I'll do it as long as It's somewhere I can get too.

They're having a fun day njk, but that just shows it was a good idea. I'll be attending that with the kids, hopefully help make some money for a very worthy cause. I put the idea of a fun run forward, Only to find out there is also a fun run planned on the same day at the same place as the fun day, so unless I (well, with your help, lol) think of something better, that is what we will be doing.

I can't believe they've raised over £3000 in 1 day, not including gift aid, or the £800 raised by the balloon release earlier, it's brilliant.

Still looking for ideas of something we can do as a family and raise sponsorship money.

Not sure how old the children of your family are but a few ideas....

Sponsored space hopper mile,
Sponsored hill climb,
Sponsored pyjama walk,
Kart race (the type where everyone makes a kart then winner is the first to cross the finish line. Is it soap box derby ??)
Tallest sunflower competition (all the kids get sponsored per 20cm's or something, would prob take a while to collect sponsor money lol but could maybe get the neighbour hood schools involved. Or tomatoes, £1 per tomato grown),
Sponsored dog walk (could be combined with a hill walk),
Board game challenge, to complete the most (start to finish) games in 1 hour (snakes and ladders, monopoly, draughts, tiddly winks etc)


For Adults ...
Wine tasting event, wines donated and pay an entry fee kinda thing
Usual absail, parachute jump, wing walk stuff
Male waxing,
Slave auction,
Poker evening,

Another thing which is usually popular at the summer fair is the teachers in the stocks and kids paying to throw wet sponges at them.
I like the pajama idea, maybe sponsored by time how long you can all stay in them going to work and school etc in them too.

I feel sick, to think they could do that to their own kids Lot's of us sent our love and thoughts to that couple, and all that time they knew they'd just killed their own kids. 6 Innocent little angels, killed by the very people that are supposed to protect them, I really do feel sick.

How could you, How? You're supposed to love your children, how could you not love them, how could you even hurt them, never mind kill them. I just can't get my head around it, it really does make me sad. Sorry for venting here, but sometimes the anonymity of this place makes it good for venting.

On the other hand though, you've got parents like lewis mighty's dad, who would kill himself if it meant his partner could spend 1 more day with her precious son.

BTW thanks for the ideas (honestly thought I'd replied already) I'm hoping to enter the fun run for Lewis, with my family, and maybe dressed in our 'jimjams.'

Several appropriate sponsorship's have been done in the past in this town where cancer victims were involved, head shaves. They raised a lot of money, publicity - and a lot of laughs from the volunteer's friends.

It's unthinkable Alvo, when i saw the news yesterday i was gobsmacked, your children put their lives and trust in your hands, and you get parents like this .

the love you get (as a parent) from a child is unconditional, unmeasureable & infinite......when I look into any of my children's eyes and see the love shine back to me makes me realise how all the struggle is worth it. I have always felt sorry for my friends who have never had children as they will never experience this wonderful gift.

As to the parents of the six tragic child deaths, well lets see what happens in the next couple of days with forensic evidence test results before throwing 'stones', as the police are notorious for making the wrong assumptions early on in cases like this.

I don't suppose for one moment that the parents intended to kill their children.

Maybe they thought that if their house was damaged by fire, then the council would re-house them somewhere bigger.....

I didn't want to believe it either Rok, but unfortunately they've been remanded to prison, by a judge, in the face of various bits of evidence, one piece being the fact he was seen on CCTV that night buying petrol in a jerry can when he only owns a diesel vehicle. Don't get me wrong, I really want them not to be guilty, but it's not looking good at all.

The rumours around the community, (if I can still call it that, ) are that this was exactly the case. We'll find out for sure when they appear before the crown I guess.
