Why is there extra knurled metal at the base of the pheonix? Is it a replaceable core or something?

From what I understand, it's a plate with a silicone O ring for extra sealing..

Looks like a screwed in stardust center post into a base and a SS juice container which screws over the top of the arrangement followed by a collar to seal the post..
The battery end looks plug ugly though..
