Oneday, the U.S. is much larger than the UK. Therefore and unfortunately, there are more idiots here who may be inclined to do reprehensible things.
The issue is that always after a tragic incident like Colorado, a small minority of people, both here in the U.S. and in the rest of the world, blame firearms for the problem and they want stricter gun control or the banning of private ownership of guns altogether. There are already enough gun laws in this country and any more restrictions would serve to punish the 99% of law abiding gun owners and would not deter the 1% lunatics.
We have a saying here. "Take away the guns and only the criminals will have guns". It's a big country, with long borders. Most crimes that are committed are with illegal obtained firearms. If all the guns in the U.S. were confiscated, then they would just be smuggled into here, by and for those who would use them to harm others.

There have been many instances, when a gun in the hands of a law abiding person, has prevented a crime from happening or has brought that crime to an abrupt end. However, those stories rarely make the news.

Like with all things there are pros and cons in an ideal world there would be no crime therefore no need for guns ! Unfortunately we don't live in an ideal world and people will always be able to obtain things illegally I can't see solutions either way unless humankind grows a pair and becomes peaceful ! Hippy rant over lol

After the Hungerford and Dunblane shootings, all the new gun laws did was make it next to impossible for decent law-abiding gun club members to pursue their chosen hobby. The crims still have guns, in fact, more than ever. It's easy to get a gun - recall, the Russian Army when it left East Germany, hadn't been paid for months and many guns were sold for cash to avid Westerners and crooks. Ever since then, there's been a steady flow of illicit guns smuggled into the UK and certainly not for gun club members.

You hit the nail on the head, Dave. All that oppressive gun laws do are to restrict their ownership by law abiding citizens. As an example, it is illegal to own an automatic weapon, here in the U.S., without obtaining a Federal firearms license first. Yet, the criminals have them and they use them. That psycho in Colorado, obtained his firearms legally, but I have not doubt that if he hadn't been able to do that, he would have obtained them illegally.
