My Mum also sent me to get her ciggies. I went to the local shop and asked for 20 Sovereign every day from about age 8, the shop knew us well, no one blinked an eye, seems this was common back then! (I think they were about 18p lol)
My Mum smoked through both her pregnancies and no doubt all over us as babies. That sounds awful now, but in the 60s and 70s it unfortunately seemed to be the norm in 'seasoned' smokers - ie addicts! No one knew the real dangers!
I remember my dad puffing away on his awful pipe with St Bruno or his Hamlet cigars on the go and my Mum with her 40 a day habit. I could hardly see the TV - it was like a welding shop in my living room - I hated it, I think I complained a bit but probably got told to belt up or go into another room! I always had a croupy cough and respiratory problems until I left home! I never ever had an interest in smoking. I went all through my teens, 20's and 30's and was in my 40's when I had my first cig! That was due to something happening in my life at that time. So the one thing I swore I'd never do and the dreaded habit that killed my Mum; took over my life!
Every time I lighted up, I berated myself, for the life of me I couldn't understand why I smoked and I even dreamed about smoking. I didn't even particularly like cigarettes. I think it was social smoking and peer pressure that got me started. How ridiculous at my age!
Anyway less about me; this was originally about kids around vapers! I could be very angry at my parents, but I forgive them as they knew no better. Nowadays we do know the truth! When my Dad packed up he became the most obsessive anti smoker ever, giving my Mum day after day of grief!
Vaping is 99% less dangerous to us than the fags, and maybe we're addicted to the nicotine or maybe it's just the habit! I tend to think that it's all the gadgets, mixology and wealth of flavours out there that makes it an enjoyable hobby rather than an addiction!
It wouldn't kill anyone; adult or child unless they drank it. A lot of us have copped a mouth full of juice now and then, and I personally have never had nicotine poisoning!
Kids will be kids as someone said earlier, and remember the "Sweet Cigarettes" we all ate as kids. Hmmm what did that say to a whole generation of kids in the 60's 70's 80's???
My daughter now accepts my vaping, she used to give me hell as did my husband about the smoking. She said at 9, " it's just a piece of plastic with steam coming out of it, it looks silly, I don't see the point Mum" Now she accepts it and so does my husband and I don't get nagged day in day out!
Everyone brings up kids differently but whether brought up with a "Rod of iron" or "couldn't give a f*ck" parents they are all capable of leaving one in sight and as you say kids will be kids! Oh unless they're put in handcuffs of course!
And yes nearly everyone had lighters, matches and ciggie packets lying around everywhere in families, if anyone denies seeing them then they must've grown up in a bubble!
Oh and if my 15 year old was sneaking fags, I would greatly encourage vaping! Anythings better than getting the BIG C - and lets face it folks, most of us have experienced that with someone and that's the NO 1 reason we all quit!
No doubt I'll get criticised by the sticklers; but when you smoke you do a lot of irrational things without thinking, as the need for a cig knows no bounds and you take risks just to get your - in my case "sneaky opportunist fix"
If you've never lost or mislaid an e cig stand up! have never searched high and low, turning house upside down??? How do you know your kids haven't hidden it? It's very easy for little eyes to suss out where you're hiding them, if you even hide them at all - because then you can't find them because you constantly forget where you've hidden them;) >
Mine's usually in my hand or on my desk, but sometimes you have to run to the loo! I quite often take it with me, but come on, we are blinkin' human after all - no ones infallible!
Nothing can be as bad as what I and a lot of children had to endure decades ago!
