Thankyou all for your kind wishes.
Had a cracking day, a few (lot) ales were tested and an excellent curry for dinner, along with a bottle of cava and another few ales!
It was the big 60 this time, so now I am a fully paid up member of the grumpy old gits club and am learning the mantra:

jtc I use ss in vw mode, it is about half the resistance of kanthal and allows a good sized coil with the sort of resistance I like.
