Desktop running vista, i know when i turn it on i get the packard bell screen that should only appear for a few seconds, well that's there for minutes now, about 5 or so, and then it runs along still slow till it comes up with the user icons, then when you click one of them it's back to normal speed, i did a bit of googling, and did a startup scan, which said all ok, but underneath it said unplug any cameras or devices and restart, and if you keep seeing this message contact the administrator, or words to that effect. Well i've had a word with myself and i'm fecked if i know what's wrong, it must take 10 mins or so to get to the icons being on the screen, any advice? Oh and i've unchecked boxes for what loads at startup, but it was working fine one day then the next it's gone on a go slow.
you could try adding a new user account as it could possibly be your profile is corrupt, reboot then log on as new user and see if that helps Vista is evil though
I hate Vista with a passion, it was released much the same way windows ME was, as a stop gap to keep share prices up, and stop it looking like they are running behind on a new version. As such it is half windows XP and half windows 7, unfortunately it seems to be the worst parts of both.
I would say there are a couple of things that could help here, 1st is running disk clenup (tick all the boxes), then run disk defragmenter, these will help speed things up a bit. The other thing is to unplug any USB sticks or external hard drives when booting, or remove any other form for external storage (such as sd cards or ipods). I know this sounds silly, but I have known usb and other external storage devices to cause Vista to totally hang on boot up.
