I recently purchased a multimeter as I want to start coiling my own vivi heads. I know it needs to be switched to the lowest setting under the ohm sign, but what I can't work out is where I need to touch the rods in order to test the resistance. Also, does the coil need to be attached to a battery to check?

center & outside , remember to first check the meter, then + or - off your final reading

I don't think my multimeter works for ohm though it does for voltage. When it's turned to ohm and not touching anything the numbers continue to rise but when it's touching itself or my vivi head numbers remain on 0.00 am I doing something stupid?
Red lead is in V/ohm black lead com And ohm is 200

you'll need to find out the resistance of your wires first. if you touch the 2 lead ends together you should get a small reading. ie 0.4ohms. remember this as you have to subtract it from the final reading. you then need to place one lead in the center of the bottom of the 510 connection on the vivi and the other on the outside (where the thread is) of the connector. this should give you the head resistance plus the residual resistance of the leads. subtract the resistance of the leads (remembered from earlier) to give the resistance of the coil.
