You don't really need a gas hob or a blow torch, you can always use the pulse method to oxidise the mesh

I bought pre-oxidised mesh when I first started, but it's a lot more fun to do it yourself. It also works much better if you do it yourself IMHO as you need to roll the mesh so that it is the right size for the wick hole in your genny. If the wick is too tight in the hole it won't work properly.

You have to buy the gas separately.

I don't have a gas hob - but if I did I would probably use it instead.... it's not difficult.
