It looks very similar to the gizmo Pepperty. Basically the positive of the battery needs to sit on one end of the brass strip that runs along the bottom plate and the brass pin that is at the centre on the other end needs to make contact with the other end of the strip. Also that brass strip should not make contact with the steel ring that the brass pin is sitting in or any other part of the mod apart from the brass pin or it will short the battery out. I think that the brass pin is free floating and when you turn the mod over it falls out into your hand. So it doesn't matter if it is recessed when you turn it over or screw an atty in it would push the pin onto the brass strip. Just make sure its only the battery and the pin that are touching the brass strip. Apart from that the only other thing it could be is the screw in the switch not making contact with the battery.

I don't now think thats the issue as the brass plug that sticks out isn't attached, it seems to just push in through the 510 to connect with your atty. I've tried different atty's and none worked. When I pulled the brass plug out a little the base wouldn't sit flush and when I pushed base to slot in, the plug just pushes upward so I now assume that the bar is connecting? I absolutely despair - is it what I deserve for not 'buying British' and getting a Gizmo? Tease-smiley

brownie award offered to hijack You are correct, it fell out in my hand!!! That's what I thought. So it will make contact as it will drop down or get pushed onto the brass strip Its the same with the Gizmo and is ok like that.
I would check the switch and try to gauge whether that screw is making contact with the battery.

I have an idea Pepperty Attach the base plate(I know again) drop in the battery Now remove the spring if possible and screw on the switch. DO NOT HAVE AN ATTY IN WHEN TOU DO THISThis should be safe to do as with no atty on the mod there is nothing to fire as the switch will drop onto the battery Now hold the button down and shake the Mod, If you can feel the battery moving up and down, then the switch isn't making contact and to be adjusted until the battery stops moving up and down.

I actually give up, my fingers are raw and I've tried the fire button on every half turn of the screw. Also I took the button apart and had a good look - am I missing something vital? ...like my brain and sanity? If I drop the screw too much you can't press it at all so surely thats contacted - to constant fire almost? I've gone through every step, I've even tried turning my spheroid every quarter turn from loose to firm, no change I even rubbed some autosol on contacts in case some random machine oil was blocking conductivity Thats all the correct pieces yes?

I see you have the positive of the battery at the switch end, I'd put positive down. It could be with negative down the brass bar is not touching the negative pole of the battery as it could be resting on the insulation on the bottom of the battery.

It looks like you've tried everything Pepperty if still no joy you may have to get hold of the vendor to sort it. At that price I would be straight on the phone.
