Ideally whatever the battery manufacturer specifies..What battery have you got?
If you don't know, put it on the 1amp (1000 ma) setting and feel the battery after half hour. If you feel it is getting too warm, use 500 ma..

I anticipation of the arrival of my X-Tar charger I have a mix of 18650's and 18350's, are these both okay to charge at 1A subject to the check above?

The batteries I have are IMR 18650-1400mA - 3.7v I think it's to do with the battery capacity Chris the larger ones are Okay but as a 18350 is a smaller capacity typically 700 - 900 mAh I thought I'd better ask.

I've put the battery on from out of my LT.....before charging, it read 3.4, which, if I understand correctly is when it needs charging....The light on the charger immediately showed green, which apparently should mean it's charged, which doesn't make sense..........or is it me? By the way, I had to remove the screw on spacers to allow the battery to fit in the charger

Try the lower charge setting and check the battery is firmly in the charger.

OK..........What I've found is, I have to fit the battery in ( light turns green ) & then lift it slightly in order to get the light to turn red. It says that if the battery is inserted the wrong way round, or is the incorrect polarity, or is making bad contact, the light will immediately show green.................It is now hopefully charging on the higher setting & I'm waiting for light to turn green........Will keep a beady eye on it & see if battery gets warm

I asked this when I first got my XTar and I'm sure someone told me it was safest to charge on the middle setting 0.5A!

I always use the lower charge, unless I was desperate, I believe it's better for the battery.... although I might have made that up

Womble could be right, perhaps it's not safest but better for the batteries. I have mine on 0.5A and I'm sure there is some reason for it
