Yep that's a good one but I haven't seen him wear slippers I don't think My aunty died in February and I wanted to get him something nice, I know he loves sweets and would rather eat magnums for dinner than food so sweets and biscuits are an idea

Older men love warm cardigans with big buttons, maybe you could dash out in the morning and buy one? Shops are getting their winter stocks in now.

Do you have a household type shop near you? they might sell Wicker baskets so you could make your own hamper if you wanted to go down that route? Is he actually going to be 80? I've made up some kits for special birthdays in the past where I write a poem either about the man or about the occasion (ie turning 80) where each stanza is 'about' something to help them - it gives clues but doesnt say what it is - then when they reach the end of each stanza they unwrap the gift that goes with it - all placed in a nicely wrapped shoe box

A wicker basket hamper is a great idea I do one every year for my dad and even if you leave it to the last minute can still be easy to do. Nice biscuits, some cake, jam/marmalade. Just bits and bobs of things that you know he'll like and use, doesn't have to be fancy stuff but can still look nice put together in a nice container

How much do you want to spend BC? Would he like/need a new easy to see watch, does he like doing jigsaw puzzles, reading, listening to music. If his eyesight's bad, maybe something practical like a large button telephone, large number or talking clock? Argos probably sell things like that.
