Is this normal? I'm quite new to this SS mesh malarkey, so far I've only made one :-[ When I test burn it, I notice it spits out hot drops of juice. Is this a feature or is there something that can be done to stop it? Fortunately I'm using a genesis style wick in my VH-Rebuild, so no hot juice in the gob, but I would rather be making nice foggy vapour and not getting so much juice building up around the base section. Also, when test burning hot juice can land on the back of your hand or pinkies which burns a bit I only used a 20mm by 20mm square so it is quite thin - certainly I could fit a fatter wick which might transfer the heat more effectively, or it could be due to poor contact between the coil and the wick causing drops of liquid to pool and then boil explosively. Has anybody else had this problem and know how to cure it?

Spitting is inherent to this design but it can be reduced by the very things you mention above, Just keep the coils evenly spaced. If you watch a fibre wick set up on something like a penelope with it's coils uncovered you will see the same spitting but to a lesser extent.

As blakey said ,just even up the gaps between the coil turns and you have a very good set up If you get spitting your wick is feeding very well

Thx chaps, pretty much the same feedback on UKV too. For some reason this lyric rather came to mind:

Quick update - I made a fatter wick, from 20 x 30 mm of mesh. This now fits snugly in the holder and through the spike. Wicking seems OK. Wound my coil on a fine screw which made a lovely even coil. Sadly slipping it onto the wick removed all the oxidiation and I just got a hot spot. Wound the coil in place after reoxidising and charring and it still spits, but an awful lot less. So problem partly solved. If I do a mesh on my VH-dripper I'll have to come up with some kind of spitting guard, maybe a bit of Fluval stuffed in the drip tip or something.
