Stumbled on this mtehod via a circuitous route, but I'm really impressed with the result. VideoThe good thing about it is that you get nice cylindrical coils with known diameter, a nice tight pitch and the stiffening procedure makes them easy to work with when inserting the wick - they don't get all mangled up. It is best suited for genesis style ss mesh wicks, but I have managed to yank some fibreglass wick through one coil I made. I just needed to separate the coils again afterwards. I haven't tried using unoxidised mesh. I oxidised mine using the jackfrost method followed by three charrings with juice. Works very well. It's a bit of a faff just for making a coil, but does give good results so worth the extra effort.

Very drole Gordy I thought it was a bit eclectic for the general forum, that's why I put it in the modders area.

I managed to stay awake for it. I guess it could be applied, but like you say, it must be a little difficult threading a fibrglass/silica with through. I might give it a go on the pene next time. Might be more difficult trying it with a Nova mind...... Something to play about with though

ETA Thx Gordy

its not really a modders subject Dom its just a method of coiling

True, but we don't really have anywhere else. I just wanted to put it where those who are interested could see it and where it wouldn't get buried in more general stuff.
I appreciate that not everybody wants to build their own coils.

I've used the winding a coil round something then threading the wick through twice now, and it works well. Makes me feel warm and fuzzy knowing my coil is neat, even and almost perfect. I'm using some wick that is round as a pose to some flat 2mm stuff I have. I twist it tight then while inserting it, twist it through. Sometimes helps to just slightly moisten the end of it too. A little tricky but works well. I've also found my desired amount of wraps to get what I think is the best out of the Nova with the .15 kanthal I have - 5. I tried 8 and the resistance was almost 5ohms lol. It's making the vanilla custard tasted great on the Nova. The coil in the penelope is also exceedingly good

I'm rubbish at winding directly onto the wick and prefer using a fine pitched screw or solid rod. The crucial art of the Petar K method is the 'glowing' which stiffens the coil in shape and means it doesn't get mangled when you poke your fibre or mesh wick through it. It also means a lot more flexibility in fiddling with the turns to get them even and closely spaced prior to the stiffening phase.

Another top tip I just discovered. To thread your fg wick through the coil, get a small squre of ss mesh and use it to wrap the wicks together at one end. Roll it between your fingers until it is just thinner than the coil and use it to start feefing the wick through. As it passes through the coil, grab it from the other side and gently pull the remaining wick into the coil. The mesh can then be removed and reused This works quite well, and enable you to use up all those little offcuts of wick which would be too short to wind a coil directly onto.
