Black is a hard one to remove because the edges of the object will have a gradual smoothing to black. Not a problem if you are going to use a dark canvas instead of black. Otherwise you end up with an un-natural dark edge around each object. The other option is to trim the edges of the object to remove this dark fringing. This can make the objects look odd as well.
How many pictures have you got to do?
If you want to send me one I will have a go to see how well they would turn out.
I have to do this a lot for work with artwork. I mainly use Photoshop for it.

If I want to use a white or light background on the final pics, I try to shoot them against white paper or a sheet. There is a great plugin for Photoshop that will automatically remove a green background for you. You can adjust how close to the object it gets. www.photoshopgreenscreen.comThe free version is quite good and does all the work for you. You will need a green cloth for the background though.

Was going to say stand in front of a white wall / sheet etc! if this is something you'llt be needing to do regularly you can pick up photography backdrops. Editing out a whole background is hard and will leave the subject looking weird!!!

Try the free program... GIMP 2 (or whatever the current release is). I use it to clean the pics of the tactical gear I make - as powerful as Photoshop and free... just be careful what you click on when searching! White is too harsh for a background, try to use a light grey. However, any background will cause issues if you don't have good lighting. If you don't have photographic lights, try to take the pics outside on a light but overcast day. Sean
