What do people like to read, trashwise?

Hi. I'm a writer, but I mostly write literary stuff, which as anyone in the writing business knows, makes no money, doodley-squat. So I'm thinking of writing a quick bit of trash, something that alot of people would actually buy. I want money, like the rest of us (to spend on shinies, obvs).

I know all the sexy romance stuff like Twilight and 50 Shades are hotstuff, but I don't think I could bring myself to write something like that. I think I'd rather write something geared more towards men, something with lots of sex and violence, a western maybe, but men don't buy as many books as women...so I dunno. What books do people buy here? Trashwise?

Sex and violence sell, as a given, no matter the theatre I would say, but westerns seem to be a little dated, as you have already pointed out in your OP the popular trends are Vampires. So Zombies, Horror, Vampires with a sexual and violent theme, I would read that

There are only so many ways you can write about 'Johnny B Goode riding into a town on his pure white stallion, rescuing a damsel in distress in a saloon and proceeding to clear the town of thugs' but I think people go for the unexplained, and fantasy stuff as its such a huge break from the normal, probably why horror and sci-fi sell so well.

Yes, but I wouldn't be writing about Johnny B Goode. I'd be writing about a drunken whore of a man and some real unsavoury violence. And the problem with all the vampire stuff is the industry is saturated with it. Whenever there's some new massively sucessfull book you get a bunch of writers thinking, 'Ooh, I'll try that, jump on the bandwagon.' But by the time they've written the damn thing and started submitting to agents and publishers, the trend is over and agents aren't accepting that stuff anymore. I learnt that after writing a fantasy for children after Harry Potter. (Mind you, it was awful).

I tend to read detective/CSI type trash. They could all do with some extra sex and violence though

Totally love Walking dead, As you say same plot, but the unfeasibility makes it more entertaining.. It is 'unfeasible'.. right?!?

If you are into writing westerns check out the HBO series 'Deadwood'. That is what I would expect from a western nowadays.

I mostly read sci-fi, but I've really been enjoying REAMDE.
