I watched the programme last night on 50 facts about diets. They said that Low fat spreads are full of trans fats and not good for you, margarine is not good either, better to have butter?
I hate butter, can't even cook with it because the smell makes me puke. So, just what am I supposed to put on my bread , bake with etc?
I always assumed I was doing the right thing using Low fat Flora? I am confused now. ???

Not all spreads contain trans fats. Avoid any that mention hydrogenated fats as that is the "friendly" name they go by.
Many of the Sunflower or Soy based spreads are fine.
An example of how bad trans fats are came to me through my cousin whose children left a tub of I can't Believe people buy this crap out in the garden with the lid off. While I was visiting she came across it and it was a year past it's sell by date and looked exactly the same as it would bought new. Nothing living had touched it at all, there weren't even dead insects in it.

I watched it too. To be honest, if we took on board all the things that are supposed to be bad we would all be eating lettuce and not much else, and i'll bet some boffin somewhere would find something wrong with that too. I just use bog standard Clover as i like the saltier taste. Don't use low fat spreads, but if thats your bag I wonder if any of those ones with olive oil in would be better? I honestly don't know if they are or not. I do like butter but just got out of the habit using it when it was consider evil a few years back. Funny how things keep swapping back and forth. Fat is no longer the enemy sugar is, and it's certainly the case for me as i am diabetic.

Lettuce can cause water retention apparently so that's out #icon_rofl# so air and water are your best bets, I know what you mean Julie , it is so confusing, this is bad, then this is bad, very annoying

Its funny because I'm the opposite and a long time ago found out about what goes into marg when I was looking into what I ate I try where possible (chocolate not included) to eat non processed food because it helps with my aches and pains. Thing is dairy makes me ill too, so I use goats butter. I personally can't taste any difference but some say they can. Daughter says it tastes of sheep

The way I look at it is, everything in moderation. The only thing I was never moderate in was smoking ( sorted that)
I have 2 days off a week so that's when I have breakfast ( toast with anchor butter) At work it's a bacon roll ( no butter)
I have a drink every couple of months, no reason I just don't think about reaching for alcohol. Having said that my diet coke is of course full of aspartame. ( can't win everything )
That's my motto though " Everything in moderation is fine"

Putting it into perspective ,THEY say all things are bad even WATER, if you drink more than 2 litres a day you can DROWN yourself I will just carry on with what I use,it doesn't seemed to have done me any harm yet,and any extra weight I have put on since stopping smoking is because I started eating too much sweet stuff! # #

Drink sufficient water ( it's quite a lot ) and it sends you high, mentally unstable. Too much water imbalances the salts in your cells, it's a similar effect to drinking salt water but that has the opposite effect by increasing the salts concentration in your cells.

The water thing is actually true! My OH is a psych nurse. When he was working in Bermuda years ago they had a patient there (don't know what his illness was) but he couldn't stop drinking water. It go so bad he did nearly die. He had to be kept away from any form of water access. Even the toilet bowl!!! ewwwwww!

It's potentially life threatening.

I occasionally use mayo light as a spread on bread when I've run out of marge, it works well enough to lube the bread. Sometimes, like once a year, I'll take the pork or beef dripping and fry up a slice or two in that, or (heaven) fry a couple of eggs in it. That way I transport myself back to my granny's kitchen where such things were everyday occurences and tasty fried food was the norm - if deadly.

When we had roast beef on Sundays after school on Mondays i used to have a slice of bread with the beef dripping. The lovely brown jelly under the set fat was heaven. When i grew up i would visit dad on a Sunday and he would have a fry up in either lard or beef dripping. They all said it was bad for you, but dad lived to be 92!! Obviously didn't harm him.
