Can't believe how many posts in this thread I have experience of myself. Am not making any of these stories up.
Firstly atm we have two long haired black cats, mozzie who is boss, always gets the food first and only let's sasha have some if she hooks it out of the bowl with her paw. However despite this we can not put weight on mozzie he's a bag of bones where as sasha just keeps expanding!!! Both have been checked by the vet and given the all clear but it is frustrating, I struggle to pick sasha up these days!!!
Secondly luckily she's moved now but we had a little old lady living next door who continually fed them tins of tuna despite the fact we kept asking her to stop. Finally after they'd been vet checked due to weigt worries we told her the vet had asked us to ask her to stop as if sasha got much bigger her health would be a worry. As far as we know she did stop then, certainly feeding sasha.
Also when I was young a ginger and white kitten turned up on our doorstep, a neighbour had seen it the night before and taken it in but had nothing to feed it so knowing we had cats brought it round the next day. As the poor thing obviously hadn't eaten over night and was tiny we popped it in our garden with some food. Mum was adamant it wasn't coming in, but when it was still in the garden at bedtime bearing in mind it could only have been 12 weeks max and it was winter we relented and brought it in. We put posters up in local shops, adverts on local radio and knocked loads of doors around the estate trying to find it's home as it appeared well loved, all to no avail. It would go out and come back to ours etc. Anyway after a few months we'd both fallen in love. After 12 months he was definitely our cat. He then brought another tiny kitten to our garden, which we didn't feed and which would stay all day but disappear at night. This kitten also appeared well loved, so when he'd been visiting daily for a week or two we tied a note around it's collar saying if your kitten disappears and you're worried please call us he's probably here. The next day he appeared again and after a while they did phone. We said yes he's here and gave them our address to come get him. While they were there they told us they'd been so worried as 12 months earlier they'd lost a ginger and white kitten of the same age!!! I'm afraid to say we kept quiet and prayed Astrophe did not appear!! Astrophe lived with us for 12 years in which time he developed cancer 3 times. the first time the vet but the tumor out, second time removed his leg to get all the surrounding tissue saying it shouldn't grow back again, but when it appeared for the third time we didn't think further ops fair so had him pts when it affected his quality of life, he was the best cat I've ever owned and I still miss him to this day!!!
Lastly, give me animals over people any day!!!
