I remember the avo 8 well, from what I recall they used the big square batteries that were used to power the hazard list at road works.

All you would need to do is put the meter on the lowest resistance range and put one probe on the centre pin and one on the outer case of the head this will give you the resistance of the coil in ohms

If memory serves me right the slightly older model of the avo 8 I have takes I think 2 or 3 different kind of batteries , oops just found it .. it's an avo model 7

Just opened it up ..... shame on me it still has the batteries in it from over 25 years ago lol

2 x flat 1289 / 4.5 v batts and
1 x R20s which I think is a D cell

I use a fluke for work and it takes loads of abuse in my tool box but for your needs a cheap one off the bay will do just fine
