Mine seems to take a couple of days of almost exclusive use to get down to a third full . . . then that last bit of battery seems to go whoosh in an hour.

That's about as scientific as it gets with me lal . . . but you could always buy another, just to have one in reserve fully charged.

One question, is there any accurate way of telling how much battery is left?

The battery indicator on the display is pretty good, I never let mine fall below 1/4 full before iI plug it in though so I have no idea if the last 1/4 drains quickly. Outstanding battery life on them though.
