Hi all,
New to vaping, but I've been doing a lot of reading and I've come to a couple of questions I can't get the answer to, hopefully someone can help ?
I've been watching a lot of GrimmGreen videos on youtube and he was banging on about tank/cartomiser combinations. They looked like the carto was inside the tank somewhere. I've never seen these, am I missing something here or have I misread what he's saying?
Second, I've seen these videos about variable voltage Ego batteries and I'm tempted to get one of them, but I can't quite work out if they'll work with the stuff I have for my 510 battery fitting. They all seem to need an adapter ?
I know it sounds a bit basic, but I don't know where else to ask.
Any help appreciated.

The tank carto's are also referred to as DCT's ... dual coil tanks. It is a tank which snugly sits around a cartomiser and o-rings prevent leaks. The carto has a hole which feeds the juice into it. It's a way of consistently feeding your carto with juice.
For fittings, first of all you need 510 batteries which the ego batteries are. Some have ego threading on the outside of where the delivery systems connect. Vision/CE clearomisers have a skirt which goes over these.
Classic example is the ego cone. The atomisers screw into the central part where the atomisers connect with the battery but the cones screw onto the outside for aesthetics. Other devices actually screw onto the outside threads.
What stuff do you have for your 510 fitting?

It's just a Riva starter kit, but I've bought a load of cartos to go with it.
The cone is the one that came with the kit, but I've found without the cone I don't get much vapour/hit so my concern is that I need to buy something to replace that.
My real issue is that the Riva is great for all-day use, but I'd like a VV battery of an evening to 'play' with and don't want to splash out a lot of cash to adapt it.
EDIT : Oh and cheers for the explanation of DCT's. I can look them up now. Just needed that pointer.

As far as the VV batteries, stuff like an Ego Twist will be no different form-wise from your Riva. Since they have the extra circuitry and the switch at the bottom, they have less battery life for the same size as a non-VV, i.e. a 900mah Riva might be about the same length as a 650mah Twist ... however the stuff you have will work with a Twist DCT's can be a bit of a fiddle to fill and you need to be careful with them. I lost a lot of juice when unscrewing them once and the tank came fully off. You can buy carto's with holes already punched in them or buy carto's and punch them yourself, either with a special tool or a dremel which I have used before. You have to get the correct length carto's - they are longer than the usual ones. DCT's are ok - flavour is a bit muted in comparison to others but I still use mine. Most popular are probably the Vivi/Vision clearo's which will also work with your Riva's or a Twist. A VV device certainly helps with DCT's when the carto's start to run out of steam. As an alternative, Vapeescape have this in stock now www.vapeescape.co.uk/itaste-mini-vv-passthrough~488A variant of this was my first VV device and it has a good battery life and will give you a range of recommended resistances to vape at. These don't have the external threading however so any tank type which uses these won't fit without an adaptor

No problem - it sounds like you are on the cusp of starting to explore what's out there and it is bewildering. Any things you are thinking of investing in, post back and someone here will give you good advice, I'm sure.
I wish I had actually skipped the Ego VV stuff and gone straight to mods now but you will be investing a tad bit more up front. You can get mod devices quite cheap but you have to factor in the cost of chargers and batteries - before you know it you are pushing over 60 notes ... doesn't sound too much but then there are the normal running costs in your monthly budget to add in, carto's etc and juice.

As Ash said, it's the priming of the cartomzier for the DCT that can be a bit of a bore, but once that's done it's easy enough to refill.

Ash, has covered a fair bit Figgis, me personally I would go with vivi nova's or the clearo's.
The dct's can be a bit of a pain I have had a few accidents with them, then again I know people who swear by them.

Hi figgis, lots of good advice there. You can use anything with a 510 fitting on your Riva and as said you can get VV devices (the Twist or the Spinner) with the same form factor. If you want to try DCT's or Vivi Nova tanks they are quite a bit bigger in diameter than the Riva. It might be worth considering a bigger VV device like a Lavatube or even better a Vamo (which also gives you variable wattage). You can get these at quite low prices. The snag is you also have the upfront cost of getting a decent charger and some batteries - worth it in the long run though as they will last a long time and work with other mods you might get interested in later on.
A final word on DCT's. These come in different sizes, the 35mm ones will take a standard carto, the 45mm ones take an XL sized carto. You can use either dual coil or single coil cartos provided they are the right length.

Thanks all. Loads of good tips here. I've just come back from a Burn's night do and didn't have a single ciggie Unbelievable really that after a week I can go out to a pi55 up and not have a cig. I was even vaping in the main room where the party was going on with 150 people - nobody actually minded which I was impressed by, although it was mostly friends. This vaping is great.
