I'm up north, in Brittany & a few nights ago we had about three inches fall, solid icy stuff. It's still around, but we should be able to get out now, as we had some sun today. Friends in mid France & some more southerly had loads more snow than us. lol

Dolly, my mum won't set foot outside in the snow. So when snow is forecast, she melts some lard in a pan and mixes bird seed in it. She puts the hot mixture into old yogurt pots and lets it harden. When hard she takes it out of the pots and she now has fat/seed feeders that can be thrown out of the window and don't disappear into the snow.

How about some sort of 'washing line with a pulley' contraption that you could work from the kitchen door?! Or here's a more sensible idea that my Dad came up with: he uses the brackets from his hanging baskets outside the patio doors to hang feeders on in the winter. He's also put one just outside the bedroom window. The food's off the floor and you don't have to go out to refill/change them. You also get a great view of the birdies!

Thanks all for the great ideas. I think i will do your idea Oneday. Then get Mr Dolly to hang them where the cats cant reach the birds. I do feel so sorry for the wildlife in these conditions. Our fox had a good feed over night. We had lamb shanks the other day. Our dog had one bone and foxy got his last night. We do have badgers about here, although i havent seen them in our garden, only running up the footpath in the street. Not even sure what badgers eat. Will have to go google it.
My bum not so sore today but my spine is very stiff and painful. Might have to up the meds for a few days.
