Linux is great but you need to have a bit of tech savyness about you. Or have someone who is willing to set it up.
(I use Linux Arch that took me a whole flipping 2 solid days just to get the UI to what I wanted and it is pretty basic). I think tho Linux is a good OS to learn in the longrun as open source is becoming mainstream. (just look at the new mozilla mobile built on linux)

Ubuntu really doesn't need much tech savvyness. I have an older laptop that just can't run very well with windows at all - slow as a wet weekend. Put ubuntu on and runs great. Seriously, if I can use it, anyone can

Linux is good ok and as much as I dislike windows, I still keep it. I have used ubuntu before, but I only kept it for about 3 months before removing it and going back to Windows 7

Chill, If you know the machine will be mistreated and used mostly to "Consume", then a browser is a browser. Ubuntu. Install to the HD or run it from CD or USB or SD. No work harder...work smarter. Old hardware is old hardware.
Have fun. I

I always delete and recreate the previous partition and do a fresh install not an upgrade as well. I've always found upgrades can inherit earlier problems and generally run like a three legged dog! Fresh installs are the way to go, although they are a pain in the backside to get setup again.

to save all future problems you should do a fresh install, get everything set up and running and image your system for back up, that way it's a simple install if/when you need it.

Hmmm. Why do I get the feeling you are going down exactly the same pointless route I trod over a year ago with an old PC.
I tried to revive a low spec desktop, but it couldn't be done.
Then, one day, my missus asked me if I wanted an old CD disk she'd found in the attic. It was the OEM windows XP disk I had lost!
I downloaded SP2 and SP3, and copied all my files to a portable HDD. 3 hours later, as good as new. I then "dual booted" a Linux distro and taught the kids how to select either Linux or Windows.
13 months later...still going strong. very low spec as well......

I don't think you can revive old computers without a lot of skill and knowledge. That's why I find it depressing most people don't either create a back up disk as the first step or buy their windows with a OEM DVD. I have a windows 7 pro desktop and fitted an SSD back in March. With the install DVD you can so just about anything. Without one (or an image) you can do almost nothing.
Just my opinion.
Dave.

My problem was I needed to back up my things, buy a pack of DVD's and then unpartition my HD and finally format. The install only took about 30min
