Just the question of the wicks material perhaps...... ...suppose the question is, is it a safe-ish way to get nicotine? vs. tax losses from not buying cigarettes... I've been doing some reading on wicking materials - it's one of the reasons I don't like Clearos (specifically the use of Silica in wicks when exposed to heat). If you have ANY doubts about silica wicks, then it may be best to not dry-burn them from what I've read. I can't find anything specifically problematic with them, but I've worked with Silica and I don't fancy using it in something that heats up. (This is purely my opinion). just been doing some reading, someone reckoned the cartomisers use cotton as wadding, but on this thread www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/modding-forum/284030-wick-materials-safe-vs-dangerous-11.htmlthey talk about using cotton gauze, checked my diy 1st aid kit and bingo, some old boots sterile gauze swabs, requires a certain technique to roll up the 3 strands (sharp scissors for cut of gauze swab into roughly sixths then fold in the edges of cut pieces first and fold again and then twist, this stops dangly bits) and then braid the 3 strands, but I have just made a cotton wick without loose dangly threads. cant wait for my new dismantle-able cartomisers to arrive to test it out. If it works well I'll post a new thread with instructions. and photos

Agreed on most points- IMO no matter what we use in them, they are going to be miles apart from the stuff inhaled by the burning stuff. Its just a matter of how you interpret the current info and what we feel(gut reaction or informed intelligence) comfortable in using.
Good luck and keep us informed how you are doing. You get great support on here.
Andy
PS " and bamboo wicks" never heard of them being used but isn't that what is in those plugged in air-fresher bottles of oil? That sounds interesting but I wouldn't have thought they would wick quickly enough.

I think it's part of that addictive personality trait. So long as I'm not smoking though, I'm happy to read loads of stuff and use my vapes whilst working out what is the best thing which doesn't cost much

Welcome Paul I myself have only just started vaping (nearly 3 weeks) and I also rolled my own. It's great finally getting of the smokes and feel so much better. Hope you do stay off them.

Well? what? 2 weeks or so... no cigs... no (little) coughing up brown gack anymore... bit more energy...
Currently vaping on an A7 rebuildable with custom ss wrap round cotton gauze wick on an ego-t battery upgrade... 2.8 ohms so have to apply power few seconds before a drag but nice....
The bamboo thread is quite good but was spitting a lot before I learnt about the ss gauze wrap technique, cool. too many twists on 0.20 nichro with this gauze I think... and perhaps bit loose coil... and too much ss round the core.
think I'll get some 28 awg nicro from maplin and do an oval coil with multiple bamboo internal threads perhaps, still waiting on arrival of hemp twine.
The A7's are quite good, stainless rebuildables, only small reservoir, but found with like vivi nova the stuff just evaporates and thickens anyway, so... may as well just do top ups on A7.
so I have a vaping habit now LOL.
2 weeks and £nothing avoided. LOL (except tar... and various other nasties...)
Safercigs have the A7's in stock.
One negative point about the A7's or positive, depending, they have a hole right through centre to battery terminal, so if you overfill you can get leakage down into battery, and probably bit of condensate as well.
A7 on the eGo-T upgrade, or standard CE pen type battery, the 510 thread seals on the battery terminal post so easy to wipe off the blob of juice on just centre of battery with kitchen towel , but on something like the Lambo with a probe terminal more difficult to clean, so myself I would not use the lambo with an A7. However it is suitable for a bottom feeder type battery mod apparently because of that hole allowing juice to be squeezed up through it from below. The Vivi nova works well on the lambo as long as you only very gently tighten it. Yet to build the AGA-T2 which uses a top hole for air draw.
The CE2's seem to me the most efficient in terms of minimal juice use and moderate sized reservoir. But the Vision CE2 rebuidlable centre post was recessed meaning quite a tight draw unless screwed in with a wobbly fit on standard pen type batteries.
But A7 perhaps most efficient as you only put about 6 or 7 drops in. Just got to optimise coil ohms for 3.7 volts.

So about 2 weeks in, funny was in a shop today and guy about a metre away from me smelled like an ashtray, sure I would not have noticed that a fortnight ago. Mainly vaping on the A7 stainless due to T2 being a pain to fill. Wow the Enjuice desert oasis is nice like a cigarette should taste. Though the Enjuice vanilla is rather disappointing but still way better than the HS premium impulse. The beer mash that is currently happening smells way more powerful than I remember.

Well done Paul. I've spent a small fortune on kit but still saving off stinkies. I got me about 3 months worth of liquid but there are so many good bargains to be had

I was wondering if a lot of the "throat hit" from silica was due to silica breaking down under heat?
The A7 and T2 do not give same throat hit though plenty of vapor...
Think bamboo core is cool, though on A7 making a coil with stainless mesh shielding round 100% bamboo thread better not having too many thread cores I think. Can overpower coil capability for heating, tried 3 core and too much, 2 core is OK. And question of whether make oxidised coil then thread... or....
T2 pure stainless mesh coil takes some burning in. Once done, very nice.
The Enjuice vanilla may need a bit of resting, a week later with 2-1 Enjuice desert oasis, very nice vape.
The Hyper Heaven Fresh air-filter I have is only registering odour.... not dust.

The hemp thread arrived, just a 4 wrap .20 coil around that in an A7 is very good. Better than T2 stainless. A7 is kind of semi dripper, but great atomiser.
The enjuice desert oasis is very nice, got VG and PG mix, both good.
like I said enjuice vanilla not so vanilla, as a feedback on site says.
but yeah enjuice desert oasis I would recommend. try both VG and PG mix make yer own mind up.

2 months (ish) and no cigs
Thought I'd just try a roll up today, still had that sort of mental "I fancy a cigarette" process going on in back of mind, had about two drags and thought it tasted like an ashtray, not nice at all, amazed I ever even liked it, so going to try the warm soak of baccy (still have a load of american spirit additive free left) in vg method and see what thats like.
Still got a habit of vaping though, but no coughing up brown gack anymore.

I use the A7/pheonix as well, brilliant bit of kit. I like the centre air hole as that's where the flavour comes from, so you just have to position the coils over it and you're laughing. Well done on the 2 months btw and a very belated welcome I can smell someone an absolute mile off now when they have smoked, yuck. Do you roll the bamboo inside a SS U wick? Is it difficult?
