Car help needed

I know we have a couple of mechanics on here, so need to know what you think is causing this please.

I have a 53 plate Picasso, the steering goes a bit wobbly at around 40mph, but you can feel it very slightly all the time. The left front tyre was badly worn on the kerbside and I had to get it changed, the tyre place said not to bother getting the tracking done because of the wobble problem, otherwise I would just have to get it done again after whatever was needed fixing, was done.

And tonight, after going round a hard left hand corner, I noticed what seemed to be a slight knocking from the front R/H wheel.

And it pulls to the left.

Does this make any sense to anyone?

Obviously something that moves is bent or damaged in some way, but I'm not skilled enough to know what.

could be any of a number of things womble tracking arm, ball joints, wheel bearing, wish i could help

Could be a wheel bearing or cv joint

I am not a mechanic but probably CV joint if it's happening in a corner..Also look for stones in your tire..

It could be the wheel bearings, but they usually last the car's lifetime..

The wobble is usually wheel balance rather than tracking, but might need tracking too given that you have uneven wear..Did you just get one tyre replaced or both?

Jack it up and see if you have any play top to bottom by rocking the wheel itself and also check side to side, top to bottom could be wheel bearing but the most likly will be side to side and that might be track rod end.The type place didn't want to do your tracking perhaps but if they had been worth their salt would of checked this for you.After the track rod ends have been replaced tracking will need doing.
This is the joint at the end of the steering arm a couple mm play at the outer edge of the wheel is ok anymore and that is what is causing the tyre wear.With the potholes and parking on kerbs these joints take a hell of stick.

That's what I thought, I got one tyre replaced, but had them balance the other front one as well.

Aha; that depends on the make of car. From my time spent making bearings I can tell you some hair-raising stories about what makers would accept as good enough.
I wouldn't touch one particular make now, because of that.

If a bearing is badly worn,then jacking it up wont be necessary, just hold the top of the affected wheel with both hands and rock, you will feel any obvious play and replicate the knocking as it were. but not worth taking any chances being a heavy car and at the engine end where all the weight is. Jacking it up is worth it though.

10 years old..
Suspension system. Shock bushings, ball joints, Control rod ends, Shocks, springs... How many miles?
Wheel bearings will "ronk ronk ronk" (Think dying fan).

wobble is probably more the tracking, the clunking is either lower ball joint or drop link,or even possible anti roll bar bush,drop links are very easy to replace,most of all these are caused from speed humps! and potholes.....

as for wheel bearing do as above wheel test top bottom hold and side to side if you feel movement while doing it look at the lower ball joint,usually with wheel bearings they start to rumble when they are on way out

have fun, as for me i shall be under mine looking what needs done for mot and get mig out and probably be welding a hole in the seal i ofund at xmas,but been waiting for some semi decent weather!

Sounds like your tracking is out. If you have a friendly local workshop they should do it for little or no cost.

As all above,for your cv joints try turning to full lock and pulling away,you don't usually get wheel wobble with these,if you badly curbed the wheel try swapping it to the back

Finally had a chance to struggle of getting angry with the stupid system of keeping the spare tyre and jack under the car. Ever heard of corrosion on mild steel Citroen? Grr

Anyway...... the wheel doesn't move top to bottom or side to side. But the whole wheel does move forward and back, ie on it's hub, quite a bit, I'm not sure it's supposed to move very much at all. Not that I've had much business with that bit of a car, but I'm guessing it's the CV joint?

Can you tell me how much it will cost for me, or a garage to do it? And if it's possible for an amateur mechanic to do?
