It’s easy to make connections in people’s minds, especially when they can see one of the things to be connected but not the other, and where you can produce a plausible scenario where the thing seen could contain the thing unseen. So you can link Vaping and any kind of respiratory illness because the thing seen is the inhalation of Vapour/smoke, and the thing unseen is any kind of illness you would like to think of.
Vapour goes into the lungs so you can argue that it causes any kind of lung disease, and since nicotine affects the blood, you can extend it to any illness at all. Lets face it are dealing with the majority of people who will read something in the paper or catch a one sided point of view broadcast on the television and believe it regardless of whether it is factual or not. You can manipulate the definition of ‘plausible’ until it is so distant from the truth you couldn’t see it with the Hubble telescope. It can just be down to how skilful you are at “explaining the facts”.
As a Healthcare trainer I could easily use my “status” to reinforce anything I chose to, and my students would suck it up willingly and then go on to quote me to others (I have tried it, and it’s shocking what people will accept as factual) only recently did I convince my grand daughter that Scottish chickens lay Scotch eggs, silly I know but it doesn’t take a great leap does it?
Even educated people will believe that anything that looks like smoking will inevitably lead to smoking. If you are accustomed to vaping Vanilla custard flavoured steam you are not going to like smoking tobacco. It is very, very different. Yet people accept the association between something that looks like smoking and real smoking. The counter argument then is, vegetarians should not have veggie burgers because it will inevitably lead them to devouring beef patties and possibly cannibalism (well it’s meat too is it not?) and of course lesbians should not have dildos’ as it will lead them to !!…….. Even this argument will have no effect. Sure, if you are not a regular nicotine imbiber, the amount of nicotine in the stronger e-liquids can get your heart rate into dangerous territory, these things will have much the same effect as if you are teetotal and one day decide to down a bottle of whisky. It’s a hell of a shock to the system. If you have avoided nicotine for many years, a large dose of the stuff will send your metabolism into overdrive. It’s cheaper than drugs.
We don’t need to hear more about it. The link is made in the hive-mind of the drones. There will soon be talk of ‘Nicotine addicts who say there have no problem because they are in denial’ and all the rest of the antismoker brigade will jump on board as usual, trying to convert us all from drug addled disease ridden dropouts who are a burden to the state into “normal healthy responsible and contributing members of society” just like they are. Apologies to all, just one of those days……
The South African police have said that Oscar Pistorius may get the electric chair. If you ask me he was dangerous enough on a pair of stilts,
Never mind giving him a mobility scooter
