I always hated Picasso until I saw Guernica in Madrid - I'm now a convert Same goes for Van Gogh, as it happens. The real thing is far more powerful than any photograph. But then I am an arty type I saw an exhibition of all the preparatory work he did for Guernica it was fascinating to see the progression of ideas from simple thumbnail sketches and sketch books to full blown drawings and brush sketches as big as the actual painting itself, some even bigger. You're dead right about seeing the real thing. A few years ago I went to the National Gallery just after they had restored all their Van Gogh's and re-hung them, the sheer intensity and brilliance of the colours was fantastic, no photograph could ever capture that. I suppose that art is a bit like e-juice, every one's taste is different, some you'll all agree on, some you won't, but there's something for everyone. Art is incredibly subjective, in essence it's someone's view of the world on canvas (or other medium). I love how you can see the ghosts of the sketches in Guernica, some might say they're echoing the ghosts of the victims. It's the one painting I spent the most time with - so many layers, so much information and emotion - just sheer genius IMO. Van Gogh I love for the kind of 3D nature of his work, the verve and energy he used when applying the oils is evocative and beautiful and rarely captured in photographs and prints. Seeing The Starry Night in MoMA was incredible! I think it's what a lot of Cubism was about, wasn't it? All different angles and aspects at the same time? What people forget about Picasso, or never knew, is that he was a highly gifted artist even as a youngster and achieved incredible works of 'traditional' or classic art in his youth. He learned all the rules, mastered them and then broke them. That's what makes him brilliant, whether you find his work to your taste or not, I think you've got to respect him
