The batteries you have will be fine, you will know when to change the battery as the vapour production will drop off. Protected batteries are recommended for mech mods but plenty of people used IMR without any issues. The idea of using protected batteries is for protection from shorts and to prevent running the battery below around the 3.2v mark, protected batteries will shut off the power if there is a short which saves the battery and mod from any damage and when the voltage gets too low it will cut the power just like when a non mech device does like an eGo battery or Vamo for example.
If using IMR batteires you need to test your atties on a device with a ohms checker or use a multimeter to make sure its ok before putting on the mech mod. You also need to change the battery when the vapour noticeably drops off, running the battery too low can prevent some chargers from recharging the battery if the voltage is too low which makes the battery useless.
I hope that makes sense, I'm knackered!

I could recommend a few but what I don't know is the max length the UDT-L can take so that needs finding out first really in case you ended up with protected batteries that are too long.

the UDT-L is my first mod and I really like it, I'm using it with the Efest 18350s from vapegear and a Kanger Protank I'm not sure I'd class it as a true mechanical mod though, it has a microswitch/pcb & wires in the top part.

Before someone else says it, there is a switch and wires in there so it isnt a truly mechanical mod. It works fine though mate, vapes well I have one.
