djs - I do know!! Have been playing the piano since the age of 6, that's 47 years. And I teach it,for my sins. As you might have guessed from my avatar, I am a jazz musician, teaching improvisation and running the Cornwall Youth Jazz Orchestras CYJOIt's my passion, and I just love working with the committed young players, they are a breath of fresh air for my jaded old bones and they keep me young too! I don't think I can beat 47 years. I think I started aged 7 or thereabouts. I'd love to play Jazz, but make do with messing around when I'm not busy playing Greig or Rach.

If you've sufficient technique to play Grieg or Rachmaninov, you have ample to get to grips with jazz. There are a few really good books for classical players who want to get into that genre of music - here's just one which I have looked at and seems very good. There is also a great book called Jazz Piano (imaginative, huh?) by Mark Levine which I use all the time. Well written and not patronising, just very useful! I have my copy on the desk next to me as I type I am also PMing you about this - check your inbox! Andy

I also play jazz piano, and have a fantastic teacher. Before I found him, though, I was using the Tim Richards Jazz Piano books, which are great. If you're new to jazz, best start with his Blues book, which is a prequel, so to speak, to his jazz books. Good to know there are other people on the forum interested in jazz piano.

I'm more into classical. I got one book (a very simple book) from amazon but thinking of getting the carol barratt classical book.... Playing lots of hymns too...most of which I don't know. And it's helping my concentration as well . Had to stop practice early tonight cos felt light headed
