Does anyone know how I download a codec to get MP4 to play? I've downloaded the Cineform studio which is the go pro editing programme, but it won't run. I've got windows XP if that makes any difference. If anyone can help I'd really appreciate it, thanks

a lot of editing programmes use quicktime with mp4 so you at times have to have that installed.. I'd try that first. I'd download and install FFDShow and configure that for your system. ffdshow-tryout.sourceforge.net/

I want to be able to play video and edit it. I've bought a 64 Gb memory card so I can video all my dives this November in the Maldives. We'll be doing 4 dives a day for 5 days so that will be around 18 hours of video, obviously want to be able to chop a lot of that out. I'm going to be keeping the Go pro fixed to my head harness as I'll be using my underwater camera too for stills, so need to be able to just leave the GoPro recording.

Trouble with that is the Microsoft codecs aren't up to scratch really.. ^^^
TBH Dee it's that long since I used XP i've forgot how to set up codecs for it too... lol I'm sure there's loads of info out there for FFDShow and configuring it, I use a nifty little tool for configuring on Win 7 that saves a lot of hassle.

It's worked but it's very jumpy considering I have the correct memory card. I'm going to pop down to the Scuba centre to see if they can offer any help I also need a good easy to use programme so that I can cut and edit the videos as this one does most things but LOL! Any advice! It's been transferred from MP4 to AVI from what I can make out.

VLC will play just about any format.
I personally use Virtual Dub for Windows editing and handbrake/ffmpeg in Linux.
Virtual Dub is very easy to use - think it will take mp4/mkv s input, and will output to compressed avi - very easy to cut frames, mix audio, etc

I wanted a program to make & convert videos & put on you tube......Windows movie maker is built into my XP, but it's a nightmare........continually freezes & I have to restart the pc manually......I downloaded YouTube movie maker, which does a good job.........Trouble is, it affects the loading from disc of games, so after I use it, I have to uninstall it again until I need to use it..........

Well I've given in today and taken a trip to Curry's. I've had tons of help of a brilliant guy with lots of knowledge who makes films in his spare time. He's explained everything to me really well and spoke to his friend who is the main film maker and also uses a GoPro. He's advised me that I need a much faster computer and I have to agree, the 2 minutes I did of film took over 1 hour just to convert from MP4 to AVi on my PC and that was after it crashed twice! I've ordered a new lap top with a 8GB working memory and 750GB hard drive, I've also ordered a 1TD external USB3 hard drive, I've been advised to edit the footage from the external hard drive which will keep the Laptop memory free. I've also been advised that the GoPro films at 4gb and I need to lower that to 1020 or 80 can't remember which it's due to the HD that's taking up all the PC running power at the moment. I've been advised to check out two editing programmes, Adobe premier which I think my son already pays for for his Uni work or something else which I've forgotten but he'll remind me when I pick the Laptop up. He's also going to give me his film maker friends contact and he's said he'll be really happy to help out, which I'm sure is an offer he'll soon regret LOL! So feeling as though I've learned a lot, spent too much (good old credit card) but really pleased today

Can I ask why you'd want to convert from MP4 to Avi ?
MP4 is a much better container especially if working with HD and x264 codec. I've done a lot of video editing and my go to programs are from the Adobe suite, Prem Pro and After Effects. I also still use VirtualDub at times as said above it's an excellent app for quick edits and has some great filters too and free. Don't believe it does MP4 as standard though but you can get plugins. Prem Pro if you've got it is a steep learning curve but well worth it in the end and you will be happy you chose to learn how to use that over cheaper software. The adobe website and some decent tutorials to get you started with basic functions. Think they call it adobe tv now.
