Tried, just ecowool in an AGA-T, no luck at all, just wouldn't wick fast enough. Tried: 4x 1mm double looped at top. 3x 1mm single loop at top. 3x 1mm no loops. 2x amm no loops. None of these could wick fast enough. Someone over at the pit recommended adding SS mesh, so I went to town... 2mm ecowool core, #500 SS mesh wrapper, with a 3mm ecowool sleeve between coil and mesh. This wick literally sucks the juice out of the tank!

Good tip @mrlord, certainly helps to eliminate the `hot spots` problem.
Glad you sorted it out for yourself.
Happy vaping.

Can't see the picture properly as I'm outside. Does the ekowool section sit on top of the deck or is some of it in the tank?

Could it work using 2mm silica as the core and then 3mm ekowool at the top?

dannyw14 - I don't see why not, the Ekowool and silica core will do the same job. Might have to get me some mesh and give this a go - not sure my eyesight will be sufficient though! Andy

Mr Lord - could you give us an idea of the dimensions of the mesh you used please? I have a small piece in the AGA spares bag, but this is probably only enough for one wick and I want to use it carefully and not waste it before buying a sheet. Also, what mesh size do you use? Thanks in advance! Andy

I used #500 mesh for this one, but usually use #300. The peice was cut to the size of half a business card, wick rolled along the length, cut to size after fitting.

Could it work using 2mm silica as the core and then 3mm ekowool at the top? Probably, depends how tight you roll and how much mesh you use.

And, as a newb to this mesh business, would you use the same sized piece of mesh to roll a mesh-only wick? Andy

Depends on a few factors, and on the wick hole size. Assuming you are using an AGA-T with a stock wick hole...
If you want a hollow or silica filled wick, use the same size, about half a business card. If you want a solid wick, use about 50% more on the length.
The width isn't an issue, just make sure it's wide enough to reach from the bottom of the tank to above the positive post then trim it after fitting.
You don't want it to be too tight in the hole, nor too loose, once you get the hang of rolling wicks, it's a 2 minute job. If you buy an A5 sheet of mesh, it will last you ages, even after you have wasted a pile playing...

2mm ecowool core, #500 SS mesh wrapper, with a 3mm ecowool sleeve between coil and mesh. has this been done before? looks like pure genius to me as a genesis virgin...why is this preferable to using just the mesh?

It has been done before, I think they call it a Hybrid wick. Why I like it: Central silica wick stops the bottom of coil grounding on bottom of tank, in my experience it wicks better than a hollow one. External silica sheath completely avoids the coil shorting out on the wick, which can sometimes be an issue, I also think it gets the juice onto the coil better and keeps the coil chamber clean and dry.
