You could always get a rebuildable dripper to keep your coiling skills in, they're so inexpensive to pick up now and great for testing flavours.

Is there a limit to the number of times you can put a new head in an evod ? Does the actual evod minus head have a shelf life?

All of these types of things have a shelf life. How long, depends if you drop them etc. Eventually you will have to change the whole unit, but evods tend to last longer than many, unless you get stress cracks from over tightening.
