Hi guys need some advice. I've been trying to rewick my novas and protanks with no luck. They either work fine for 10mins then taste burnt or can't get a good draw out of it. I use a needle when wrapping with silica so not to wrap it too tight. But no joy. Any ideas on what width silica and what gauge kanthal wire in should use to get round 1.8 - 2 ohms. I've been using 2 and 3 mm silica and 0.15 wire. Any advice on what to use and what I may be doing wrong very much appreciated. Thanks

I use 2.5 silica now on both. And 0.2 kanthal. Given up with ekowool. Identical process on both. I give the wick a good soaking before reassembling, especially BCC s. If you are getting it to work OK straight off, it sounds like a wicking issue. Top coils in particular need some patience and lots of swooshing.

I ve been using 3 m ekowool and .2 A1 Kanthal with 4 wraps which gives me around 2 ohms .
When i get one thats misbehaving i just move the coil around a little with a toothpick to see if it settles and i find the cause of the fault(then either change the coil baring in mind the fault ,or if it seems ok i just leave it be)...still learning but getting the hang of it.
I ve only got 3 m ekowool left but waiting for a delivery then im going to use 2 m ekowool with .2 A1 kanthal(should be 5 wraps i think on the 2v mm wool)

I use 3mm silica and .2 Kanthal for my Novas, 2 x strands of 2mm silica for clearos, and 3mm silica for Protanks. I do have some 3mm Ekowool, but I find it too thick to persuade into the slots in the base of a Nova head, although it does wick well on the odd occasion I have got it to work. I will be ordering supplies again soon, and aim to still use .2 Kanthal but will stock up on 2mm Ekowool in the hope that this will sort out both my Novas and Protank heads. Hope this helps! Andy
P.S. I agree that it sounds as though your basic technique is good, but maybe winding a bit too tightly, even with the use of a needle? Also, check that the wire 'tails' are being pulled down fairly tightly before popping in the grommet and again before the bottom pin, as any touching of these tails against the body of the base unit will cause shorting and general 'not-workingness'! - I know, it happened to me when I first started!

For both Evods and Protanks: I use 2mm Ekowool for the wick and 2 x Strands of 2mm silica wick on top with 0.2 Kanthal I use a paperclip and wind the coil tight because when i take out the paperclip it comes out just right.

I find the best result comes from 2mm silica with 5 wraps of 0.2 kanthal, if you flame both the wire and wick before coiling it is much easier and you won't need to use a needle, as the flaming process makes the wick more rigid and the wire less springy. once the rubber grommit and metal bung is in, tug both bits of the wire slightly to make it fit snuggly, and use 1 piece of 2mm silica slightly shorter than the coiled one, on top. Also, if the coiled wick is too long it might have problems wicking, as the well around the wick in the protank base is pretty small. I have no idea about vivi novas, but that seems to work well with the protank
