It detracts from our usual ethos of posting and reading at our own leisure because you are too busy trying to keep up with what is being typed.

I have to agree, don't think it would add to the sophisticated feel to the forum at present. I too like the thought of checking the forum and reading the posts in my own time, not feeling rushed into replying to text speak on an IM-type communication.
Just my thoughts though . . .

Thanks Chrissie, I think I understand it now, don't know how much value it will add.... I'm enjoying the way that the forum is setup and run currently so don't see any need to change.

Well this is all a bit negative - so I would say that whilst they can end up a bit of a mess, chatboxs on forums can also work really well as a place to hang around and do a bit of chit chat - probably depends on how many users are trying to talk at once I suppose but the chatbox on another forum (not ecig related) I frequent is the heart of the community.

Basically its like an irc channel built in to a forum - no real reason why they two shouldn't co-exit happily.

Personally I voted yes to it. IMO shout boxes are for off topic chit chat that would just be boring to read on the forum. I don't like them where the main topic of conversation is for what the board is about as I agree having said info in a post for people to read up on later is much healthier for the forum.

However I do agree it should not be in a prominent position. What I would actually like is a chat room like ukv have got, that way it is seperate from the board, people can decide whether they want to enter or not and all the important info gets posted on the board anyhow as people realise only a fraction of the boards members are in chat at the time

I personally dislike them, they take posts away from the forum and I can never be bothered to read through or reply on them.

I always check and read new posts/threads on the forum every day.

I cant vote as on my phone this morning but i would say no. Used them on a few forums over the years and always ended in tears and as i spend most of my time on here via my phone i would miss a lot due to crappy signal lol.

If you want to have a conversation, is that not what PMs are for?
A shoutbox would lower the tone of the forum, with people using txt-speak to try and keep up.

As someone mentioned, if you want this feature, go use Twitter.

Basically a chatroom then? Not something I'd use. I've seen other forums with a live chat function and they seem to coexist okay, but just my opinion, this place doesn't need it.
