Kayfun 2.1 air lock

I'm not enjoying my Kayfun Mini at the moment. Every time I refill it I seem to get air locks, resulting in dry hits and nasty tastes. Anyone have any ideas what causes this?

My first guess would be "filling it"

When I first refill I cover the air hole and suck through the drip tip a little to create the internal pressure or vacuum for the juice to start flowing. Not too much though because you'll flood it.
