OK, so I've got used to the banner ads telling me I can start my own forum or give people potato badges. But... earlier today I was browsing bluetooth headphones on Amazon. And then tonight the banner at the top of the forum was an advert for - bluetooth headphones on Amazon The internet is watching me

The internet IS watching you.
I logged onto a computer 200 miles away from home. I didn't go anywhere near an email account or facebook or work-related stuff.
I did however log onto AAEC, and log off.
Whilst I was looking at some products on an e-cig website, there was a link to "like this on facebook"..... I thought that was odd....and that if I chose to "like it on facebook" then I'd need to log in to facebook.
So, I clicked on "like on facebook" and guess what? My page came up....and a "is this you? please log in."
Google and/or facebook KNEW it was me from the websites I'd visited. Scary.

Oh....and I get E-Lites banners wherever I go on the internet too.
I got these on a public/shared computer just by visiting the "wrong" combination of sites in a row.

You can opt out of targetted ads by yahoo google etc (mostly they are google i think and there is an option in your g a/c settings to turn them off) More details hereBy the way, currently in development are screens on streets that will also display targetted ads as you walk past....lol....imagine how embarassing if you have been searching for haemorroid treatments or the like..suddenly everyone on the high street will know it! more info on that here

That's what cookies do, some of them - they recognise you and they're sending anonymised data back to Google (Analytics) and a whole host of other companies that pay for the service who, in turn, use it to advertise at you. You can take measures against it if it really bothers you, such as Firefox's pr0n private window mode or some bits of software and so on. But that's kinda the price you pay for the internet and a lot of sites being free.
Tis the old adage - if it's free, you are the product.
