My order from the vape mesh company turned up today and I could not wait to try and re build a protank head.
I used a few videos and took the best ideas from each. I used 2mm ekowool and 0.2 Kanthal wire and made a 4 wrap.
It came out really well and was reading 1.8 on my Zmax.
I put it in and let it soak for a few minutes before vaping, initially it tasted a bit weird but after half hour or so it tastes great, good throat hit at 6w.
Does anyone torch their wire and wick prior to starting and if I did it would it stop that strange taste initially?

I don't torch my wires any more I just dry burn them and that's only to test the coil out. Nor do I seem to get any strange taste with a new setup, I tend to enjoy it more with a freshly made up coil at least for the first day.

I did not dry burn it, maybe that would help? Normally If I put a pre bought fresh one in it tastes great straight away but they are silica, but this one had a hint of something else, not over powering but I could taste it.

What i do when i re-wick the same method as yours is once all the coiling is done and all in place i do dry burn the wick (without juice on it) for 3-4 times with 2-3 second pulses just to burn of any impurities that can come with the wick

That same night I rewicked my head again, this time with 3mm silica and 5 wraps, coming out at 2.1 on my Zmax. I dry burned this one and the coil looked great, it did burn the wick though. Super-Shiny do you wash the head after? I didn't bother and threw some juice straight in. For the first hour I could taste the burnt wick but since then it has been great, good flavour and for some reason it vapes a lot better at just 6W compared to pre made heads that I have bought with the same resistance. No idea why.

ginge7289 when i fit a new coil/wick with it all still open i dry burn it for 2-3 seconds about 3-4 times just to burn off any impurities that may be on the wick.

I only pulsed mine the same briefly but it was still enough to burn the wick. I pulsed it till the coils went red then stopped.
