Great news Bel My poor pensioner kitty has to take Metacam on a daily basis as pain relief for her arthritis. She also seems to be having issues with her teeth. I've had her to the vets a few times about it. The last time vet give some ABs for gingivitis. However, although that seems to have cleared up, she still appears to be having trouble eating. I'm dreading taking her back because I really feel she may need some teeth out & I'm frightend of the anasetic. (Please ignore the very bad spelling mistakes btw).

Hissie,
Don't worry the anaesthetic will be for the cat, not for you;)

I know clutter, but she is still quite over weight, even tho' she has lost some weight & her age as well. I'm not sure she will be able to take an operation I am very concerned about her, she has been part of my life for 19 years & I can't bare to lose her.

Your vet probably won't risk anaesthetic then Hissie. It might be gum infection. Does her breath smell bad? Vet would prescribe antibiotics for that.

No, her breath dosen't smell. She had a course of ABs about a month ago. When I took her back to the vets, he said the gingivits had cleared up, but I'm not wholy convinced as she is still having problems eating. In the past few days she has hardly eaten anything & just does not seem herself. She has hardly moved off the sofa.

Is she curling up or stretched out?

Hissie, ask your vet for some steroids for her. My old cat Merlin had several teeth out last November & if anything, the gingivitis got worse after his op He had 3 different lots of AB's & none of them seemed to work. Poor lad was eating so little, he was just skin & bone They then put him on a course of steroids that instantly boosted his appetite & also cleared up the gingivitis

Clutter she is doing a bit of both.
Chrissie, I will ask about steroids. I think they will be better than even the Metcam. She just can't be on Metacam at the same time as steroids apparently.
How long can they stay on steroids for? I have an appointment tomorrow afternoon at the vets, so will defo discuss the option then.
Many thanks.

Her name is Eppie. Her photo is at the start of the pet photo thread. She was a bit younger then She is the only cat I have had that's managed to get past 5 yrs old. My other 3 cats died very young & I guess that's one of the reasons she is so much more important to me. She has been there through thick & thin. Hows you cat doing now?

Your black cat looks just like our babygirl.
She is a mischief cat, she constantly had shredded claws where we lived before, we never figured out what it was. She got stuck up a 30ft tree, she too sleeps in car engine bays, she got bit by a feral and it looked like she had been shot as she got an abscess. She also suffered from a long term addiction to hills science plan, it made her obese but she wouldn't eat anything else (or she would eat wet food at the neighbours at a push, this makes her ill too). The obesity may have been partly caused because she was on steroids for 2 years for one reason and another.
When she sat down she looked like a penguin, poor thing.
She is constant trouble, our other cat couldn't be more placid, it must be true what they say about black cats I think.
